Subject: You know I don't think Evans would be so ugly if

(1) They didn't paint it that horrid green color.

(2) They didn't build it with a courtyard layout, AND THEN FILL IT IN WITH CLASSROOMS.

(3) It were hidden amongst other ugly buildings, like Wurster or Boalt, in that corner of campus, instead of being out in the open and right near gorgeous Doe for constant and refexive visual comparison.

I hasn't grown on me yet. In fact, before I didn't think it was so bad. Sure, unpleasant in its verdance, but not nearly as bad as say, Wurster, Cesar Chavez, MLK, Eschelman or Zellerbach. That changed when I started having discussion in it. God, as bad as it is on the outside, imo it's so much worse on the inside. Dwinelle may be a maze, but at least it has windows.

yaeh i guess. the area surrounding Memorial's Blade is the only place with nice buildings, and Evans kinda stand out there.

Yeah now that you mentioned Wurster, Eschelman etc, we do have some butt ugly buildings.

We have like no coherent themes. 1/3 of the buildings have red roofs, others and green or gray and boxy. And the whole campus is built on a hill. so some buildings are trapezoid, you walk in on 2nd floor on one side and walk out on 3rd floor on the other.

We have a couple buildings built on hills like that here. One of them has ground level entrances on the 1st through 3rd floors, it's pretty weird. But at least it's not that ugly.

I wish they would stick to the orginal Beaux Arts style instead of implanting monstrosities like this:

http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2004/07/images/musiclibrary1.jpg

And in addition to Memorial Glade, all of the buildings along Sather Way from the Gate are nice. Plus the College of Natural Resources, VLSB, Haas Pavillion... we've got some nice stuff.

But definitely agreed on the mix-match. It was the second thing I noticed about the school, besides all the bums.

You know, I even like modern architecture...but a lot of these buildings aren't aethetically appealing on any level. It's especially bad when they don't fit in with the rest of the campus and the general environment of the area - the super-modern buidlings look best on modern, urban campuses. A lot of the more traditional campuses would be better off sticking to more classical styles.

Apparently there's a lot of pressure on architects to keep moving forward with respect to design. Most of them probably despised the brutal postmodern stuff, but it was the thing at the time.

I wonder how much control the client has over the design, though. I can definitely understand that the architect has an advantage to do something very cutting edge, but if I was a university president (or whoever makes these decisions) I think I'd take a harder line on the style of the buildings. If you're going to put that much effort and money into a building, you don't want to end up with something that frightens your prospective students.

You'd be surprised. The last time they built a dorm (well, three connected dorms) at the U of C, the University insisted that the architect liven up his design with brighter colors. It's now scorned as hideously ugly buildings by most of the population.

At least it would be easy to find after a night of drinking, I guess.

Maybe the problem is that college buildings are designed and paid for by people who don't have to use them. I've been surprised how poorly-conceived some classroom and dorm interiors are.

That's what the entire Universität Trier looks like. Every building is in that style.

I can't find any good pictures, so here's the best I have (you can see the building in the background, that's what the whole place looks like. Except for the cafeteria they're standing in front of).

the VAC (visual arts center) - the architect based the building off of his divorce with his wife, so there's a huge hole through the middle of it. the second floor is all glass (it's called the "fishbowl"), and the entire structure is very 70s, except in brick. it's awful. i couldn't find a very good picture of it, though, but you can get the idea, at least.

http://library.bowdoin.edu/images/vac2.gif

it probably wouldn't look so bad if it weren't surrounded by the original brick and ivy college buildings and the extremely beautiful art museum. but it is... and it's awful. additionally, there is a war memorial on one side of the entrance, which is basically 2 giant penis sculptures straddling the walkway. that definitely makes the structure even better-looking.

WJH is hardly ugly. It's not bad at all. I don't think the Carpenter Center is too bad, either. As for the Holyoke Center, that's not even really a part of the "school" in the sense most people here would be talking about it as. Agreed on the Science Center.
