Old Bridge, Piscataway and Randolph students named presidential scholars

Dan Goldberg/For The Star-Ledger

Three New Jersey students - two from Middlesex County and one from Morris County - are among the 141 high school seniors named 2010 Presidential Scholars, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said today.

David Kersen, of Randolph, Joseph Schiavone, of Piscataway, and Dedeepya Konuthula, of Old Bridge, were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and community service.

“I was pretty excited,” Kersen said. “It was really neat.”

Kersen, a Delbarton School senior, plans to attend Harvard University next year. He wants to major in physics and minor in near-eastern studies.

Schiavone, who attends the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies, also plans to attend Harvard. Schiavone said he would like to study computer science and plans to spend the summer finishing a novel he is writing.

Konuthula could not be reached for comment.
