Student Cellist Named Presidential Scholar
Bobby Chen ’10 is just one of 20 high school seniors nationwide to receive the prestigious honor
Phillips Academy senior Bobby Chen was named a 2010 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts today. The coveted honor is awarded to 20 high school seniors nationwide who demonstrate artistic excellence, superlative academic achievement, and community service.
The Harvard-bound, young cellist qualified as a nominee for the prestigious prize in January when he became the only cellist selected in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts competition in Miami as part of the “Young Arts” category, which is the sole nominating agency for the Presidential Scholars in the Arts program.
The standout student and active community service participant co-heads the Andover-Lawrence Strings Program, which provides music instruction for underserved children from the city of Lawrence, Mass. He is a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra at the New England Conservatory of Music, and has performed and competed in many concerts over the year, most recently finishing as a semifinalist in the Stulberg International String Competition in Michigan last March.
“I am probably most proud of this accomplishment,” says the Newton, Mass. native who has been making music since the age of four. “This is the first award I’ve received for my music which also acknowledges what I do academically and for my community.”
