Alex Cunha of Arcata High School in Humbolt County
A seasoned athlete and high-achieving scholar, senior Alex Cunha, 17, said the most important lesson he's learned in his four years at Arcata High School is to get out of your comfort zone.
”When you get in a situation where you've never been before, you learn to work your way out and meet a bunch of new people and learn a bunch of new things,” Cunha said. He gives freshman students this advice in his role as student body president.
In addition to his participation in student government, Cunha is a member of the school's Gay-Straight Alliance and the National Honor Society.
He said sports have also played a major part in his life.
”It's just a great relief -- after you've been studying for how many hours at school -- to run around for two hours,” he said.
A committed soccer, basketball and baseball player, Cunha has a 4.29 GPA and was named a National Merit Commended Scholar.
This year, Cunha was selected as the 2009-2010 CIF -- North Coast Section Scholar -- Athlete. According to his school, this is the first time a local student-athlete has received this honor.
The section-wide award is given to two college-bound high school seniors -- one boy and one girl -- who have exemplary academic and athletic careers.
Cunha said he will be using the $2,000 cash award that comes with the honor to purchase books and a laptop computer for when he attends Harvard University in the fall. Cunha said he chose the university because the school offered him a good financial package. He plans to try out for the university's baseball or rugby team, and study biology, a subject he said fascinates him.
Cunha said he particularly likes learning about ecology and environmental impacts because they have applications to everyday life and public policy.
”I think the best part of biology is that it's very relative,” he said.
Cunha, who grew up in Arcata, said he is excited about college and living on the East Coast, but will really miss home.
”I just want to thank my parents and I'm just really, really glad that I grew up in a place like Arcata and Humboldt County -- there's so many places that you could have grown up that's devoid of character. ... Humboldt County is authentic,” he said.
