SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
For the first time, the Teens of the Year were given more than an award at the annual banquet. Repository Publisher Kevin Kampman announced that the Teens of the Year would received $1,000 scholarships.
"This is an amazing collection of talent," said Jeff Gauger, Repository executive editor and master of ceremonies.
Being named Teens of the Year is just one of the many awards and accolades Khullar and Ragunanthan will garner as they prepare to graduate.
COLLEGE-BOUND
Khullar will be named valedictorian at Jackson High School. She has committed to attend the University of Pennsylvania, but is awaiting word on whether she was accepted to Harvard. She plans to study medicine.
"I think it's amazing," Sanjiv Khullar said of his daughter as he watched her accept congratulations from her peers. "She made all of us proud. She is very hard-working. She has overcome what people said she couldn't do. She didn't let anything stop her. She is amazing."
Ragunanthan plans to attend Duke University, where he was awarded a full scholarship. He was also named a Robertson Scholar and will get a chance to travel to South American to study HIV and Aids. Ragunanthan plans to study either integrated comparative studies or political science before going into medicine.
"I am very happy for him in the sense that he worked hard," Ragunanthan's father, Dr. Kanthasamy Ragunanthan, said as he wiped tears from his eyes. "It's quite an honor. I always knew he was a good kid. He worked very hard in his life."
