KMS principal participates in in program at Harvard

By JENNIFER SUMMER

After being selected as one of the 100 top educators in Texas and getting the nod to participate in the Historic Leadership Program at Harvard University, Kingwood Middle School’s Bob Atteberry described his first trip to Cambridge, Mass. as a “dream come true.”

KMS’s principal was selected to participate in the program organized and sponsored by Raise Your Hand Texas, an education coalition supported by business and community leaders.

“We applied for the program and the essays we submitted were graded by Harvard. I was surprised and pleased when I was selected and I have learned a lot of new material,” Atteberry said on the phone from the Harvard campus outside of Boston.

The program was held at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as one of the largest initiatives in the state. All costs including hotel and travel were funded by the Raise Your Hand Texas Leadership Program.

“The most interesting thing is we had the chance to listen to other educators from Texas talk about how they did things and we even listened to a principal from Harlem,” Atteberry said. “This allowed me to realize we were doing everything correct but still need to improve on a couple of things.”

The principals stayed busy throughout their time at Harvard spending every day in training and workshops, though they did have a few fun nights where they could enjoy each others’ company and get to know everyone.

“We were all invited out for a clam bake and lobster dinner one night. We were tired and it was hard work but also fun,” Atteberry said.

“The most important thing I have learned while at Harvard is all kids can learn... It is a work in progress,” Atteberry said.

Throughout the program, all of the principals were asked to blog about their experiences, about what they learned and updates for people back home.

They will all reconnect later in the year to discuss how the methods and new ideas worked when put into place at their schools across the state.

“I am very humbled that I have had the chance to participate in this program,” Atteberry said.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I am excited to share with my school and look forward to working to put everything in to place at Kingwood Middle School.”
