It's a respectable music school, but it is fully eclipsed by New England, Oberlin, Eastman (Rochester) , Rice, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon and obliterated by the Royal Academy, Juilliard, Curtis (with its 3% acceptance rate) and Peabody (Johns Hopkins).

It demands respect in all instrumental styles, especially jazz. And anyways, a smart music student does not choose a school based on prestige, but on the faculty member he wants to study with. This is why some violinists may choose Boston University--which by no means has a "prestigious" music department on par with music schools like Curtis--over Eastman to study with Roman Totenberg. ESPECIALLY for winds!!! Especially.
Northwestern for undergrad is very good - not as glamorous as a conservatory, but you'll go far with their excellent aural skills and theory program under your belt - not unlike Rice in that way. I would mention Bard as a good option for undergrad as well, if you were interested in jazz, music history, or musicology. |

While this may make them viable candidates in the business world, it seems to demean the validity of majoring in music and starting a solo career. Sometimes it takes a few years of a "day job" + gigs before a person's music career really takes off. I think, long term, it could improve a person's chances of making it in music if they were qualified for a day job that wasn't so humiliating and awful (aka food service and temping) it made them quit pursuing their music and go back to school for something completely different.
