Yeah, I know someone who married one of her male professors and a few more girls who briefly dated or slept with them. I also know a (slightly older) male student who ended up in a relationship with his female professor.

It's much more taboo now than it used to be. (For example, one of my teachers in HS had a relationship that started when his now-wife was an 18-year-old senior, he was 22.) It was accepted at the time (I don't think she was in his class) but now would have gotten him fired.
In college, I'm pretty sure nothing bad would happen as long as the student wasn't in his class. For example, occasionally TAs will ask out their students 30 minutes after finals, and this is considered acceptable. I don't know if professors have the same freedom, or if there's an expectation of a more defined barrier between professors and students.
In any case, vishna, it's not common, and the only times anyone knows about it are when there's a nasty scandal.
I (21/m) did once almost date a professor (~28/f), though not one at my college.

Not only that, you're looking forward to it. Right?
FYI, while that might be LEGALLY acceptable and acceptable by school policy, at least at Caltech everyone considered that extremely creepy, sketchy behavior. Unless you want to virtually guarantee a repeat of your Carleton experience at Wisconsin, I'd recommend against it.

"Joe Caltech is a pathetic douche who has some perverted Internet crush on 'use a toothbrush' (who, by the way, has a boyfriend much cooler than JoeCal)."
Not true on the first part. I have a long-term girlfriend myself, you know. (And no, I didn't meet her by hitting on girls in my section.) And on the second part, I don't deny it (not knowing him, of course), but if he's so cool what might it say that he chooses to date someone who obviously has a very, very different opinion of you?
"He's a smug assclown who believes his Caltech degree entitles him to say anything and be taken seriously."
I don't really think any sort of a degree "entitles" anyone to be taken seriously, and I'm not sure how you'd draw that conclusion, either.

I honestly don't know what he sees in her. I'll concede that she's very intelligent, and that they both seem to have similar interests.
I don't follow the a-friend-of-my-enemy-is-my-enemy logic. If someone I liked started dating you, I'd still have a positive opinion of her, I'd just seriously question her taste.

You're a fucking doucheczar for spinning this into a personal attack. You really need to find something other than the Internet to wipe your smug, self-entitled ass on, k?
After finals, she is no longer one of the TA's students. (Ok, unless the TA was responsible for grading the finals, in which case he ought to wait until grades are turned-in.) This means that it's no more sketchy for him to date her than for a generic graduate student to date a generic undergrad, which is not considered unacceptable at every university I'm familiar with. If Caltech was uptight about such things, that really explains a lot about you.

"Self-entitled"? Huh? How does that even make any sense? I'm from a middle-class family (parents are a public school reading teacher and a small-town newspaper editor) and am, in fact, probably quite poor by the standards of this board. I think it's pretty fair to say I've earned what I have, but I'm curious about how you came to the conclusion that I haven't.
I'm surprised you didn't use "doucheczar" or tell me I'm a "septed fool"--you do so love your made-up words, don't you?
EDIT: OH GOD I CALLED IT! YOU ***DID*** CHANGE IT TO "DOUCHECZAR"--HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
"If Caltech was uptight about such things, that really explains a lot about you."
"Uptight" is one of the last words I'd use to describe Caltech--just how uptight can something in southern California BE, anyway??--but I wouldn't be too concerned about that, because you'll never have to worry about it anyway. Hopefully, for you, I'm wrong in extrapolating, and all those undergrads in UWisc math classes will welcome grad students coming on to them. I have to say that I certainly can't see it going over well at U-M either, though.

If the TA were grading the final, I agree that this would be irresponsible. (At least at Carleton, professors grade the finals.)
I think that, once the TA has no further direct influence on her grades, it's acceptable to for him to ask her out.
(Now, the TAs I know who did this both got rejected. It wouldn't be my approach.)

I'm not surprised on the former (I also wouldn't be surprised if word got 'round pretty fast about it), and I'm glad to hear the latter.
And the timing has nothing to do with grading the final. It's just a bit too "I've been stalking you all semester waiting for this moment" for me.

"I've been stalking you all semester waiting for this moment"
Sounds like Pensive to me. The rumors, his over-eagerness, and the fact that he never realizes that his motives are all too clear make this scenario all too plausible in the future.
He's one of those guys who seems intelligent enough but consistently misgauges the ability of others to see right through him. His behavior is typical of the socially awkward type that treats social interaction as a way of achieving goals. Unfortunately for him, these types are prone to believe that extreme behavior is conducive to achieving these ends. It's the makings of an attention-starved tool.
Pensive, since you seem familiar with the application of Occam's Razor, you tell me what's more plausible, a tool being labeled sketchy for his awkward and uncomfortable advances, or a dorky guy being mass stalked by several girls and then ruined in a several-year-long, elaborate, "bizarre," and deliberate conspiracy of gossip and malice.
That's why nobody believes you. HTH.

I realize that what happened to me is bizarre and highly improbable.
It's not that unrealistic to believe that, after a guy rejects a girl rather tactlessly, five or ten of her friends gang up on him to get back at him, maybe spreading a rumor or playing a prank on him. We're talking about catty college freshmen, after all. What's amazing and bizarre is that they kept doing the shit for 2 fucking years, making my college experience miserable. That's what happens when one runs afoul of sick, persistent people.
I found out that one's uncle was arrested for child pornography. Several in that social group had been paid off by him to assist in the biz; though they weren't proven to have done anything illegal, they had their hands dirty. When I found this out, I used it as blackmail leverage, and that's why they stalked me for only 2 years instead of 4.

No, you're not. Joe Caltech is a tool with an axe to grind, and you shouldn't pay him any attention.
There is something wrong with a TA asking out, having a relationship with, or sleeping with, one of his students. Other than that, there's nothing objectionable about it except among dumb people who are going nowhere in their careers and try to shoot down others with pointless gossip.
Practical concerns are at hand: the undergraduate and graduate lifestyles are very different, and this might make relationships difficult, but it certainly doesn't make them wrong.

PhD in math > Masters in engineering, in prestige. I know people who would pwn at LS admissions, who are happy just to place in a top-25 math department.
Wrote a card game with approximately 2000-3000 players worldwide, on a $0 promotion budget; considered by hard-core card game buffs to be a serious contender for "next Bridge" status in the 21st century. (Let's see you pull this off.)
Have won national writing competitions (including a National Gold Award in Scholastic Writing, which was judged by professional comedy-writers and humorists) and various publications.
Two top-100 Putnam finishes, as you know. Won Goldwater Scholarship, 2004.
Turned down high five-figure consulting opportunities (with excellent income trajectory) for graduate school.

I chose to go to Carleton, when I had a 60% or better shot at any school in the country. At the time, I thought the rural LAC environment was best for me, and that's what I pursued. I certainly will not argue that CalTech isn't more selective than Carleton. Why does this matter? So the worst kid who got into Joe's school is smarter/more able than the worst kid who got into my school... but seeing as I'm not that worst kid let-in (and to be fair, Joe certainly isn't either) the comparison is useless.
As for the Rhodes Scholarship, I don't care. I honestly don't, and while I otherwise might be impressed, in this case I'm not. I never applied. The Rhodes Scholarship requires team sport membership, which I didn't have. If someone I liked got an RS, I would certainly congratulate him, but I'm not going to worship some otherwise toolish guy because he got an RS.
Joe is turning into 174, without the redeeming qualities. Moreover, 174's forgivable because it's so obviously a schtick.

"The Rhodes Scholarship requires team sport membership, which I didn't have."
Uh, you know, neither did I. It doesn't require team sport membership--not sure where you got that idea. I was involved in marching band and occasionally played pickup basketball. I also like to ski. That's the extent of my athletic experience.
I think basically, you just can't be the guy leading the sedentary lifestyle.

Huh, I guess I was wrong. I thought it required team sport membership (because of the teamwork element component of character) which is why I didn't apply.
I run, hike, and I'm learning golf, but those are all individual sports, and I'm also not very good (run about a 7'30 mile, total n00b at golf) at any of them.
In any case, I'd like to request a truce for our mutual benefit. If you don't make personal attacks on me, I won't make them on you (and I'll go back and redact some of my more pointed attacks). Despite your toolish behavior toward me, I've done some reflection and you have a lot to offer the board, and it would be useless for either of us to get a damaged reputation here. I don't get anything out of "beating" you at some silly stomping contest.

"the teamwork element component of character"
All that really means is "plays well with others," or even better "leads others." They like evidence of leadership, etc. It doesn't necessarily have to come through sports at all.
"it would be useless for either of us to get a damaged reputation here."
My reputation is long-established from over 7 years of posting. I'm not too worried.

While your reputation is of course a good one, and I normally find you a clearly informative and reasonable poster, you haven't acquitted yourself very well in this little cat fight. I'm not going to say that pensive hasn't made a few petty comments in this ongoing dialogue you all have, but his original remarks were fairly harmless and were not at all a personal attack on you. For you to respond to them by insulting him and speculating about his character when you don't even know the guy is pretty low.
Maybe you should stick with dueling NYCFan, you always come off better in those exchanges.
Just giving an impartial perspective. HTH

Whether I am interested or not, I have a feeling half of Oxford will probably try to make that trip, so I might go along just for the experience!
I need to get one of those "England" jerseys anyway, if I go--I think they look sweet and it would make a good souvenir of my adopted home for two years.
The last soccer game I saw live was an Olympic semifinal in '96. Brazil beat Venezuala, I think. Good game, and the fans were CRAZY. I took that trip down to the Olympics with my dad. Man it was a good time.

I have a large animal in my basement. I won't show him to you (he's invisible, and magical) and I certainly won't tell you how I got him, but he could eat you alive if I wanted him to. Beware!!!
Occam's Razor: You got nothing.

But my statements fit in with your other conduct on this board. I think that's all the confirmation anyone needs.
I'd believe in your animal a lot more readily if you left out the magic and posted photos of his shit in your basement on the board.

"[Your] statements" about "outside sources" are bogus. You might have one friend who knows me and doesn't like me: big deal. Consider how many trolls on the law board claim to have "outed" 174 or to know him in real life, and of course not one has ever given a convincing argument with evidence.
My "other conduct" shows that, yes, one of my personality flaws is that I don't turn down nearly as many fights as I should, and that I tend to get vicious once in one. I've known this about myself since I was 6, and have been working on it for several years. I'm sure you won't believe me, but I've been working to be less confrontational.

In the other thread, you also basically blame Carleton and women in general for any "girl problems" you might have had.
From my perpective, that (which I was tipped off to initially by the very, very odd expectation that dating prospects would be better in a math graduate program than at a majority-female LAC) is a lot more strange than picking a fight.

What happened at Carleton is that I was stalked for 2 years by multiple people, in concert. I don't want to hijack this thread and turn it into a discussion of that, but yes, that kind of adversity causes social difficulties, including in dating life.
In any case, I agree that I've done a lot of retroanalysis of the situation and assigned a lot of blame; some of it falls on myself, some on others. The blame game ends in June, and if I fuck up in Madison (I won't) then it'll be my fault.

I'm not going to list my resume here. Google me if you care that much. You're right, you won't find me hyping any card games on it.
I will point out, though, that I already *have* the master's in engineering, while you have yet to even begin work towards that math PhD. And given that and the fact that I intend an academic career, where in the world would you get the idea that I'm stopping at the master's?

the thread title is so appropriate for the discussion!!
but here is a memorable quote from ratemyprofessor.com about the chief advisor in my math dept:)
Not a very good prof. I didnt understand anything said or wrote so class time for me was competely useless. He was funny, and I loved the fact that he always wore his sunglasses inside, but his comments about inviting female students to his office for tea kind of freaked me out.

One of my TAs was fucking the prof. The TA happened to be the ex-fiance of a friend of mine (I did not find this out until midway through the semester) and he showed me a bunch of printed out emails between the two of them (the prof and the TA, I mean - she hadn't changed her email password and he'd invade her privacy regularly).

I was considering sleeping with the female professor of the class I'm most worried about in order to get an A. She's not bad looking and she always looks at me. I should have given it a shot.

Feminists would say it's a violation of gender and status hierarchy. Old men are evil to exploit young women just barely out of their teens and unaware of their surroundings away from home.

Blow Job
A professor at BU told one of his students that if she gave him a BJ she would get an A. He never gave her the A afterwords and I think she complained. He was the head of the department but he got demoted and this new professor took over. Now these two professors have a rivalry. And the new head uses the old heads name in class assignments as jokes, well it a very similar variation to the name.
Now the old head has to keep his door open at all times when he has office hours.
