... and neither of those people was banned by me. I haven't even looked at this board in days, maybe even a week or more.

So, to recap:

* Having technical problems =/= being banned.

* Having a thread deleted =/= having a thread deleted by GTO.

Got it?

It was deleted after Fan disparaged the author of the article posted.

In fact, I was having a very pleasant exchange with JAV, before it was deleted.

Here is the attack on me and Jay Mathews by Fan. I was deleted and Fan was left on. Then the whole thread was deleted

Isn't jay Matthews the same guy who writes about all the great colleges that are not well known, perfect for someone else's kid but he went to H and sent his own kid to Pomona. I'm always suspicious of his writings.

You got it wrong.

His daughter, Katie, never applied to Harvard and his book was written before she had applied to college, contrary to your beliefs. In other words, she SNUBBED Harvard, not the other way around. Katie was a double legacy, with a sibling who was also an alum.

Mathews, himself, transferred to Harvard College to study East Asian Studies and even had lived and worked in China for a period of time. His son is a journalist, as well as his wife.

But then you've been carrying the water for this fraud ever since he put your name in the paper.

From a Mathews column:

"Many relatives and friends had said they were glad that I could no longer make such shameless use of her personal life, culminating in my milking every Katie Mathews story I had for my college admissions guide, "Harvard Schmarvard."

So?

Speak to him. I did. He never said that she had even applied to or was rejected by Harvard.

Contrary to your beliefs, not everyone applies to Harvard, or even DESIRES to, including legacies, even double legacies.

Katie applied to Pomona College ED in Nov. 2002, her FIRST CHOICE EARLY DECISION.

The College Admissions Game; Fear, Uncertainty Plague Students and Parents

Washingtonpost.com, June 17, 2003 by Jay Mathews

[I am less forgiving of my son Joe, who drove Katie to and from the Long Beach airport for her overnight stay at Pomona just before she submitted her application in November. In the car, he suggested she might think twice before ruling out Harvard. He told her he thought the students who are drawn to Harvard, largely because it is Harvard, are more interesting than at any other place.

I was aghast to hear this bit of folklore being uttered by an otherwise astute young journalist who had often told me how badly managed he thought our alma mater was and how he planned never to give it any money or send any of his children there. I thought of sending him a copy of my book manuscript, highlighting all the passages that showed that the special character of the Harvard student body and the life-changing Harvard ethos were myths. But Katie had already shrugged it off, as little sisters often do, so I calmed down and waited nervously for that envelope from Pomona.]

You have been PROVEN WRONG AGAIN!

Again, Pensive had said this to NYCFan and I posted my comments on Pensive's quote. Then it was deleted by whomever, I don't know, but it was reposted a number of times by me. NYCFan obviously did not like these comments, because they are politically incorrect and they are critical of Harvard.NYCFan, as shown by his history, does not like this at all, to say the least. He would also want this post to be deleted. This post was deleted, by whom and for whatever reason, I do not know.

Subject: The "A-problem" replaced the "J-problem" at Harvard

Pensive said, [Let me call bullshit on this one. The extracurricular/"character" component of admissions has ALWAYS been centered on the upper-middle-class northeastern WASP, and probably will be for the forseeable future. It was built into the process to "protect" these colleges from the "J-problem" (and in the XXI. century, the "A-problem"). Is this racist and unfair? Absolutely, but it's what the "holistic" component of admissions at these schools was historically designed to do, and what it still does. Sure, some lower-income black and Hispanic students will be admitted, but HYP are already quite happy with the proportions they have. A cynic would say that the "disadvantaged" students are brought in solely as "diversity training" for the upper-middle class WASPs who are the HYP clientele, but I digress. Anyway, racial diversity aside, Harvard is certainly in no rush to bring in more diversity in terms of lower-middle class Red Staters who painted houses during their summers instead of founding nonprofits or, for that matter, Bay Area Asians with high IQs, who are currently rejected as "not well-rounded" out of the fear that too many of them would make spoiled white résumé kids feel dumb and not enjoy their expensive Ivy experiences.]

I agree with your assessment totally on this one. The "J-problem" or Jewish problem at Harvard and the Ivies is replaced by the "A-problem" or Asian American problem today. Now there is a de facto quota against Asian American students. There is no Jewish quota today anymore. You are very perceptive and honest with your assessment. Not many posters here would acknowledge this fact.

Your assessment is also politically incorrect, but it is straight to the point and the truth.

You also asked,"Is this racist and unfair?". You answered, "Absolutely". I agree.

Of course this is racist and unfair to Asian American applicants to the Ivies and Harvard as this was unfair and racist against Jews in the past, but how many of these posters are going to admit this?

What I find interesting is that stuff about Jay Matthews and his daughter, neither of whom post here, that is not foul and rude (just where she applied to college), gets deleted while posts telling a poster on the board to go give her son "another blow job" remain.

Being that NYCFan has never cared for my attendence here and the posts that have been deleted are ones at least some feel he would care to delete, it does make me wonder if he is the one doing the deleting. And if he is, I am curious as to whether he hacked to do it or was given the procedure on how to delete posts by one of the "out in the open" mods.

You are the greatest, JAV! You also beget great offsprings, including your 15 y.o. son, who is going to MIT for a PhD.

My posts are quite benign, and they are civil. If you read them, it is Fan who chimed in and interrupted me ruely on my thread, which was ultimately deleted.

Methinks the same also.

I agree with you.

The deletions have stopped for the time being. I wait and see what happens later.

NYCFan is nowhere to be heard from yet. 10:56 am is usually beyond the time of his entrance to xoxo. He is not here yet. Is this a coincidence?

LOL! because your son also SNUBBED Harvard. NYCFan would not like this also.

Also "hacking" into this system is illegal and a crime, punishable by law.

BTW, Fan never admits that he is wrong about anything, and that will be his downfall.

I can tell the "You are the greatest" is going to be a standing joke with me now. But unlike ghost, I suspect you meant it sincerely, and so thanks.

My son is my *only* offspring (had I another child, I seriously doubt the child would have been another people would have described as "great" as having our son be who he is was just incredible good luck, and this is why I didn't bother to have another child as that kid would live in the first's shadow) and 14 and still will be when he starts at MIT in June (sob). As someone wrote me, this is the downside of letting kids accelerate academically - you could lose their company as a household member years earlier than you expected. Well, the downside for the parents. The upside for the offspring is getting to be financially independent years earlier (as our son could have been at age 13 if he wanted to be nasty and charge a 13-year-old rent just because he made more some days than his father even putting in less hours, and he plans to be starting June, but we'll see as the stipend is not what he's been used to making) and perhaps experiment with different start-ups before having to support a family (if he ever does have a family, as he's still unsure on if he will).

Ha, maybe that's why NYCFan has never liked me. He knows I gave birth to a child who only spoke of attending Harvard once when he was 4 and never again (or if not that fact, that my son set his sights on MIT since the week he turned 8 and never applied to Harvard). Actually, he hates the length of my posts and the content overall, but you know, you can't please all people. Even God (if there is one) doesn't do that. Far be it from me to try to be better than God.

Has NYCFan really never admitted he was wrong? I hadn't noticed and will try to be on the look out here.

I have disputed NYCFan on several of his assertions in the past, and he has attacked me on a personal level. He never likes to be proven wrong, as I have done in the Jay Mathews matter. Again, his reluctance to accept the truth, even when proven as such to him, will be his downfall.

It would surprise me if he was a hacker, too, which is why if I had to bet (which I don't), I'd put my money on the side of one of the mods having given him the information (password, etc.) needed to delete posts. I belonged to a board where someone was using my son's real name and the mod was not really moderating (busy in life outside of the Internet) and so emailed me instructions on how to delete posts/threads that had information that wasn't kosher, and once someone gives out that information, it is very easy to delete away. But I think the password can be changed and if this is how NYCFan is deleting posts and threads, that it should be as he isn't deleting posts with his name (or not ONLY those, and my guess is that if he was given the password to be able to delete posts, it was someone giving out his name here that caused the mods to supply him the password) but just whatever he doesn't like, seems to me.

The rules of the site are such that posts are not supposed to be deleted unless they contain someone's personal information or are spam. I would sincerely hope that no matter who is doing the deleting, they don't abuse the privilege or go beyond what is absolutely necessary just because they don't like or agree with the content.

So does personal PUBLIC information (like where someone applied to college that has been printed in the newspaper) on someone not even a board member fall into the "can be deleted" bin? As if not, someone is certainly breaking the rules, and I suspect even if that is allowed to be deleted, other posts still wouldn't fall into the "personal information/spam" category and have been deleted.

I usually post on the existence of the anti-Asian quota, but rarely on other topics, except for posts on elite preps and public magnet schools on which I have personal experience and have done research for more than 15 years. I usually post on racial preferences in admissions to elite colleges and not much else, which NYCFan rarely comments on or for that matter, the character Bostonian/Byerly*/ Holland's Tulip/etc.. rarely comments on. I did take issue with Fan on some of his assertions on Harvard, which I also am acquainted with through family, former roommates, and other associates.

I am not "anti-Harvard" per se, as you can see from my posts. I never applied to Harvard as an undergrad, but I am a product of the Ivies several decades ago.

Lou Gerhig (?sp) of the NY Yankees used to play baseball on South Field, as the Lawn used to be known.

Harvard's campus can't match it, even though some in my immediate faimily did attend Harvard College and Harvard Med. I have cousins who snubbed Harvard College and attended Columbia and Yale, but ultimately they went to Harvard for med school in the 19760s and 1970s.

The renovation of Butler (reading room) was made possible by a Milstein and Columbia alum of the billionaire real estate Milsteins of NYC. The elder Milstein never attended college, not Columbia or Harvard, mainly because of quotas, but he and his family have a $6 billion real estate fortune in NYC. They even own the Emmigrant Savings, in Brooklyn, which was bought for several hundred million years ago, but now worth a couple billion. Google it, if you don't believe me.

I always really liked Harvard's campus, actually. A lot of people don't like it, but I always counted it among my favorites. You don't get that same sense of grandioseness (is that a word?) on Harvard's campus that you do on Columbia's, but I like the understatement of the architecture and the quiescence of the grounds.

There were really no prominent China scholars at NU, which was severely lacking in East Asian fields. There was one art historian whose name escapes me, and I believe one visiting scholar in poli sci from the University of Hawaii whose name I also don't remember. I didn't take either of their classes, though, because my focus in undergrad was mainly in Chinese language. My only academic humanities experience came from summer courses in philosophy, history, and econ that I took at Tsinghua, but that background was weak, at best. I did write my undergraduate "thesis" (which was really more of a nonacademic essay) on a contemporary China topic, but that was really born more from my experience working in China than from any academic endeavor.

I actually decided while in high school, though, that I wanted to study Chinese in college, because a friend's sister (who went to Harvard) did so and came back raving about it. When I visited NU, I sat in on a Chinese class, and when I got there, I signed up with the intent to simply use it as my 2-year undergraduate language requirement. The summer after freshman year, I went to Tsinghua and had the opportunity to travel a bit in China, and I got hooked. As soon as I came back, I declared the "Chinese Language and Culture" minor (which basically consisted of 4 years of language study and the study abroad, which counted towards the program). After junior year, I worked as an HR rep and English teacher for a company in Changchun, and when I came back, I started researching East Asia master's programs. The rest, as they say, is history.

Well, the Chinese language is the language of the future, and is being taught in many public and private high schools now.

How about studying for a PhD program in the field. Why didn't you continue?

Well, the program I'm in is a relatively new terminal M.A. program that has no PhD component. In order to do a PhD in an East Asian field, you need to have 5 years of one Asian language, 3 years of another, and 2 years of a non-English European language.

To be honest, languages aren't my strong suit (Chinese has been a struggle), and academia isn't a field I'm likely to enter, anyway. If I do a PhD, it's going to be in political communication (Penn, NU, Syracuse, Stanford have top programs, among others), because I want to go into political consulting with a foreign policy focus. I've also toyed with the idea of perhaps applying to the Wilson School, KSG, and the like instead of going the PhD route, but making that decision is what these next couple of years are going to be about.

How about the School of International Affairs at Columbia? Madeline Albright is a grad of the School.

That's a definite possibility as well. Probably the best chance I have, admissions-wise (b/c of the connections I now have here).

...and I'm all too familiar with deBary's "Sources..." It's required reading for his course. He also has "Sources" volumes for Japan, Korea, and India. The man is unbelievable.

Prof. Keene was the Japanese expert. Korean, I think was only added recently. I think he edited the rest, but did not do the actual translations for each of the "Source: books, except for the Chinese one.

So are all the Byerly folks people who lived at Byerly Hall at one time, as the Byerly* seems anti-Harvard to me and so that would seem odd, or does the "*" after the name mean the anti-Harvard poster or something?

I wouldn't be surprised if NYCFan was given moderator access since the administration holds him in high regard. Enough to call him an asset to this website.

TITCR. I asked about this possibility in the Chicago thread.

It makes sense. GTO is busy and mostly reads the law board.

GTO says rachmiel is very busy, but we don't know if he lurks on the college side. It's possible that GTO would delete some of the posts if NYCFan asked him to do so. It wouldn't be possible for him to delete the posts during all the times they've been deleted. Boondocks wouldn't delete the types of posts that have been deleted most recently.

1. Severe spamming where someone start tons of threads in a short time span to fill the entire front page. Posting personal information about someone on the board when the person has never revealed anything about himself or herself.

There was a conflict at the law side when Madame Cunt decided to out a couple posters who she met IRL because she was angry at them.

2. Rachmiel, GTO and Boondocks. There is now speculation NYCFan has input on the college side.

While talking aim chat two nights ago, Wheeeee speculated that he might have been banned, since he was unable to access the site from his computer, though everyone else in chat was able to. I made a thread asking GTO if Wheeeee had been banned, and if so, why. This thread was deleted for reasons unknown. No one has told me who deleted it or why. I created another thread about the issue and asked GTO directly about it on AIM the next night. GTO said he was ignorant of the whole issue and made this thread as a result. See the thread posted below for further reference.
