that those are the best 26 schools in the country, in order. I wouldn't have thought that Harvey Mudd would be so high, although don't know very much about it, and Cornell is probably too low because of the impact of its hotel and architecture schools. However, if you take them out it's only 2.2% and Cornell would still be #24.

One thing that may be worth taking into account is that the NMSC-sponsored awards are made on a state-representational basis, which means that not all states have the same cutoff scores. The highest cutoffs are in some of the northeast and mid-atlantic states and the lowest cutoffs are in the mountain west and deep south. This probably biases the results a bit (if you're taking it as a ranking) in favor of schools drawing more heavily from states with low cutoffs. But then again, the top-rated northeastern schools probably do as well recruiting in those states as anyone does.

That would probably be meaningful in trying to compare different state schools, but not so much private schools with a national draw.

it has been previously calculated as 17.5% for both schools in 2005. perhaps you just picked and chose enrollment numbers to support your case, though, as is your wont.

could someone be concerned about whether Yale had 17.8% or 17.5% NMFs in a given year.

Unclear to me, but it parallels recent declines in the NMS enrollment levels at Harvard and Stanford (down from around 400 and 250 a few years ago). I'd attribute it to a de-emphasis on standardized test scores, and the change at Stanford is consistent with their declining SAT average. On the other hand, the SAT averages at Yale and Harvard appear to be at all-time highs, so it's a bit of a puzzle.

In Harvard's case, I would attribute it to:

(1) a deliberate de-emphasis on SAT scores, and a deliberate and fairly dramatic swing to students from (a) the lowest economic quadrant, and (b) applicants from rural, Southern and Western areas where NMS winners are less numerous, and a spurt in international applicants;

(2) a steady de-emphasis on early admissions, which tends to attract a disproportionate number of upscale Northeasterners with high SAT scores. In the first half of the preceding decade, Harvard was averaging 6,000 EA applications or more, and filling half their class from this pool.

That said, the edge over other schools in enrolling NMS winners continues to be substantial in most years.
