he's retaking the SAT in october. i'm a few years removed from college admissions so i really don't know what range of schools he should target with his current score.

he's captain of his school's basketball team, in quite a few of honors/AP classes, 5/4/3 on enviro, chem, and us history respectively, and generally a pretty good kid (not that that matters). he's done some volunteering and he runs marathons too.

my parents are also pretty poor and he's first generation to go to college.

what UC schools should he target? does he stand a chance at pomona? i'm pushing him to go the LAC route and I think it's something he's into.

if he raises his SAT to a 2000 or so he should be a near-lock at all the major UC's (LA,CAL, and SD)

make sure he spends quality time on his essays

Not good enough for Pomona. Those students are outstanding; their SAT scores likely approach perfection (2250+). Has he thought about Harvey Mudd and/or Claremont Mckenna?

The University of California is a great option... arguably the best public education system in the world. He stands a decent chance at UCLA and UCSD. If he cracks 2000, he has a better shot at UCLA and could even reach Berk. Basically guaranteed a spot at the mid to lower UC's.

harvey mudd and pomona have about the same overall average SAT's.

Careful talking about all Claremont schools interchangeably. Even if he were interested in science/engineering I probably wouldn't suggest Mudd. The quality of life isn't great and the students are under more pressure than I've seen at any of the other Claremont schools. CMC (Claremont McKenna) is a great school if you're interested in business, politics, policy, law, etc, but it has a different overarching culture than the other Claremont schools and tends to lean more politically conservative.

Although Pomona scores are consistently close to perfect, it's also a school that takes into account background. My experience (and I'm a recent grad) is that they've been working on diversity on several levels and still try to go for well rounded students like your brother. It might be a reach, but if he can get his SAT score over 2100 it might be worth applying.

Small liberal arts colleges for him include Oberlin, Kenyon, Macalester, Davidson, Centre, Knox, Claremont Mckenna, Reed, College of Wooster, with a big reach for Haverford, one of the finest colleges in the world.

getting his SAT's up would help a lot with Claremont McKenna, Reed, and Haverford.

thanks for the advice. i figured based on the numbers alone pomona was probably out of his range, but we're hoping he's able to play basketball for them, which may or may not help in getting in. his coach has contacted their coach, but i'm not sure if there's much of a recruting process given their d3 status. anyone know?

It could help a bit, but not necessarily enough to push him over the top if there are "concerns."

Plenty of people have declined Columbia (not the one in Chicago!) in favor of Pomona and Haverford. I know of someone who transferred to Pomona from Yale. He said that it just didn't work for him. He never felt like he fit in. Went on to graduate from Pomona with high honors and took an economics Ph.D. from MIT.

Enuf said.

Grubers SAT PREP (best for math), Grammatix, Rocket Review, Barrons

And being a good kid DOES count, character is weighted. If he doesn't end up boosting the SAT, at least make sure he sends a well punctuated, well spoken essay with proper vocabulary.
