Which offers a stronger undergraduate education/experience?

Depends on your major and career plans.

If you want to go to med school, go to Rice.

If you want to go to business school, go to Duke.

If you like insecure pricks upset at getting shut out of the Ivies, go to Duke.

If you like really smart but kind of odd kids who got shut out of Stanford, go to Rice.

Rice offers the intimacy of a small institution, cheap living in Houston - withs world renowned orchestra, ballet and opera, and the intellectual and artistic electricity that rivals the very best. There's that famous "Ivy-leaguish" house system too...

how many undergrads in places such as rice and duke really get off campus though? Well I know they don't at duke at all because you're right, Durham sucks.

All i'm saying is if you're going to make a case for Rice, seems like you're grasping for straws by hyping Houston.

Duke isn't just Durham, it's Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, and while Rice may excite students who give a shit about Orchestra, Opera and Ballet, the Triangle offers a much better (college) music scene.

In addition, cost of living in Houston is relatively low. Nice restaurants, other (non-traditional) musical events, professional sports happenings, etcetera just don't cost as much as they do in other big cities, especially those on the coasts. The water ain't far away either.....

What a sense of humor!

I chimed in because I grew up in the Houston area. That's the reason I didn't apply there; I wanted to get away. But were I not from there, I would go in a heartbeat.

Rice's reputation has traditionally been based on its sciences. It's getting better in other areas, but if you're interested in humanities, soft sciences, etc., Duke is still a better bet.

At either school, the city really only matters if you plan to live off campus.

It has a really posh campus, great U-grad program, tons of respect in the Texas area....but....it's still nothing in comparison to Duke. I mean Duke is a little more know nationally and internationally.

I did my summer study at Rice and when I returned to my home uni. (top 10), the people were either like "Rice? Where's that located" or "Rice, oh yeah, thats a good school." As if to hint, that's a cute school. Nothing special.

But like I said before for its price tag its worth it. Against Duke, NO.

Rice's price tag used to be a lot better. It was free for everyone admitted, but times have changed.

The school has a much smaller enrollment than Duke.

I think the Duke campus is much nicer.

The Rice library is not up to par.

Duke has a much better reputation, at least outside of Texas.

But, the Rice/Baylor College of Medicine program is a great deal and should be stongly considered.

In terms of what? Rice's campus has a mix of old and new and not in a bad way like Harvard's ugly science building. The school looks like an Ivy only well polished and kept. It is the cleanest campus I have ever set foot on.

Rice library sucks in comparison to a library like Widener, but its very popular in Houston.

Ofcourse Duke has a betrer rep. It's DUKE! BUT Rice is glorified in Texas. Half the people think of it as part of the Ivy League.

Yes, I agree the BCOM/Rice package is a very good deal.
