"Even Harvard Grads Feel the Job Squeeze
June 23, 2008 02:27 PM ET
In these inauspicious times, it will surprise no one that college-age folk—law students or summer job seekers alike—are having a tough time finding jobs, and according to a vaguely scientific Harvard Crimson survey, even those in the cushy Ivy League aren't immune. Around 66 percent of workforce-bound Harvard seniors reported having a job lined up, compared with 73 percent in a similar survey last year, prompting this question: If even Harvard grads can't find jobs, what do we mere mortals have to hope for?
Another unsurprising stat: Harvard graduates are less interested in consulting and financial sector jobs (39 percent are pursuing those careers, down from 47 percent last year) and are instead opting for work in the arts, health services, media, and public service."

IF (and i mean IF) its really true that fewer are going the on-campus recruiting finance/consulting route and more are going the 'you are on your own good luck' route to arts, public service etc, im not at all surprised that fewer seniors have jobs lined up at graduation (most anyone who goes through OCI and wants a finance-consulting gig (broadly defined) can find a job (at least when times arent bad).
Everyone else is forced to use far less straightforward and effective means of finding a job.
but it just might be that finance-consulting firms arent hiring as many this year, folks were shut out at OCI and are now saying they'd rather be in arts, health service, public service etc. etc.

It seems that Sociology has become newly-fashionable.

NYCFan, you are clueless as well. Of course I knew she went there and the fact she is revered in that department does much to discredit it as an academic department.

I have a particularly strong disdain for sociologists, especially those in the Princeton department. Most of the stereotypes are true and nearly all are clueless idiots. If the nation were left in their hands we would crumble overnight.
In all honesty you are irrelevant to me. I hate with great honesty those, like yourself, who think they have "made it."
You are so saturated with arrogance you can't even detect your own inflated self-regard.

got it. im sorry you feel that way. no one in their right minds should think theyve ever 'made it' and i still dont know where u get that. and like i said before, real life/=xoxohth, which, if you havent realized is lighthearted schtick and for some a good source of advice (ive received a great deal over the years and given some when i thought it could be helpful).
but in any case id like to return to being irrelevant to you if possible. too much negative energy.
edit: and feel free to leave a way to contact u off the board if youd actually like to communicate more.

LOL, I just gave career advice to a Harvard alum tonight. I think part of it is expectations--she was of the mentality that only certain jobs are worthy of her education. But I guess when you attend a school like Harvard, the pressure to land a gig at a big consulting or finance firm or feel like a failure is huge. She mentioned classmates who went to smaller firms, and that was almost like failure from the way she made it sound. They want to rest on their laurels, but they don't seem to think as much in terms of networking and earning dues.

are you kubrickfan
by the way, you can't really blame harvard students for feeling entitled--they have people like NYCFan telling them a Harvard degree is the greatest thing in the world and that they're instantly guaranteed the most prestigious position in whatever field they chose, so when reality sets in its a bit more depressing. this is especially the case for people who want to do nonprofit or government type jobs, where degree prestige matters much less

No, not kubrickfan.
I think it's mostly insecure people from any prestigious university who believe their degrees set them apart from the hoi polloi that feel this way. I can understand how the environment at these schools fosters such insecurity in students, especially when they're competing with people who are equally as bright, if not brighter. It can be ridiculous, though--this girl I was talking to was surprised that a friend of hers from Harvard had to "settle" for a Duke MBA after being rejected from Harvard Business School despite going to Harvard for undergrad and working at Goldman Sachs. That kind of entitlement attitude is annoying.
