In a Harvard Crimson article about the value of college rankings it was stated that the best measure of college quality was a survey that measured student satisfaction, professor interaction, engagement in college life, etc. This puts to the fore College Prowler, the Princeton Review and other national organizations which collect student opinions. These organizations continually demonstrate that students at Princeton have a far higher level of satisfaction with their school than harvard or yale. Kudos to the Crimson for acknowledging the value of college student (consumer) opinions.
(excerpt from the Crimson)
"A more accurate indicator of educational quality, as suggested by The Atlantic, may be the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), distributed to first-years and seniors across the country. It questions students directly about their academic satisfaction, extracurricular involvement and engagement in campus life. These questions specifically address issues such as study abroad, interaction with professors and campus diversity."

I agree with the Crimson article. If US News incorporated CollegeProwler's student academic survey ranking and the Princeton Review's "happiest students" ranking (or even the COFE student satisfaction surveys), it would become all the more accurate. Perhaps the inclusion of such surveys would force some of the bigger schools to pay more attention to undergraduates. The question however, is how much weight do you assign to such surveys? I say 10% each.

states that Brown has the happiest students.
You are so hopelessly simplistic, the PR Survey is meaningless. However, the COFHE survey or the aforemtneioned NSSE survey probably would be a fairly reasonable surrogate of student satisfaction levels.
But the most important survey is the annual one conducted among the top 1-2% of our nations students, in which Princeton lags both H and Y. How many who are offered enrollment at each school choose to attend, and when students are admitted to both, whom do they select. Remember, the market place is very efficient, and it is the decisions made by these 12th graders which best signals how they perceive the pecking order.

Your pathetic attempt to prop up yale with old, inaccurate and inconsequential information is but one indication of how difficult your mission is. Your concern should be with the experts who continually drop yale to lower ranking levels. As the Fiske Guide indicates in its current 2008 edition, yale may someday be in jeopardy of losing its position in the Big 3 to Columbia (clearly an indication that it is just barely holding on to its bottom position). I would also be concerned with the opinion of yale's Daily News Editors who favor Princeton over their own school in their 2008 Annual College Guide. And lastly, I would be concerned that NOT ONE NATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE RANKING PUBLICATION OR NATIONAL COLLEGE GUIDE PLACES YALE AHEAD OF PRINCETON! NOT ONE!
PS. Notice how the Harvard Crimson mentioned the need to survey College students (actual consumers). Hmm! I wonder here who has been saying that! LOL
PS(2) Student satisfaction is but one criteria, and afterall, Princeton can't be number one at everything. Can it?
