The Schools I've Applied to: Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Northwestern, Emory, Upenn

I've already gotton into: UT - McCombs Business Program, SMU (with a 30 grand scholarship offer)

My Stats:

SAT: 2310

Math - 780

CR - 760

WR - 770

IB Candidate

GPA UW: 3.59

GPA W: 4.3445

Rank: 23/704 (top 3-4% of senior class)

Transcript: Extremly high upward trend. (half A's half B's in 9th/10th. Straight A's in all IB/AP classes 11th and 12th grade year. lowest grade senior yr = 97 in AP US gov)

- My Counselor selected "Most rigorous"

EC's:

1. VP of NHS (3 yrs) [100+ members]

2. Legislative Captain of Varsity Debate team (2 yrs) [Compete on the District/State Level, Won awards at State, Member of "Governor's Cabinet" at State level, Nationals Qualifier]

3. VP of Mu Alpha Theta (2 yrs)

4. Executive Board (Treasurer) of Senior Class (2 yrs)

5. JV Tennis (won minor district tournaments - 2 yrs)

Volunteering:

1. Church Youth Chairperson, Bass guitarist, Sunday School teacher (4 yrs)

2. Teen Court Volunteer Lead Attorney (3 yrs)

My recomendations were fantastic....I read thru both of them (they let me). They checked "best in career" or "top 5%" for all categories. Both wrote 500-word letters on my behalf too...

Awards: National Merit Commended, AP Scholar With Distinction (3, 3, 4, 5, 5), QuestBridge College Match Finalist, Texan of the Month Award, Award of Excellence in Social Studies (GIVEN to ONE senior in the entire senior class of 700+ students)

My Essay (650 words) - It was about how I plan/coordinate parties for special education students, with the help of NHS volunteers at my school. Most ppl said the essay was pretty emotional/touching/uplifting.

I'm a freshman at Dartmouth. I would say that you have an alright chance of getting in here, but this school gets a ton of applicants with your kind of numbers. Your recs will help for sure, and your ECs, while not particularly distinct, are still pretty good.

The fact that you are Asian is the main problem. I'm NOT trying to be racist or anything, but the Asian population at this school is outstanding, and the school is not nearly as welcoming Affirmative Action wise to Asians as they are to other minorities.

Is God on the admissions committee??

Unless you were using God as a metaphor for "blind chance"...

FWIW I think you've got a truly solid shot at most of those schools. The whole racist thing has been easing up a little (a *little*), it seems, so the picture is maybe not quite as dark as it was, say, 5-10 years ago.

Good luck, anyway. You'll get a great education at any of those schools.

Don't judge the OP's beliefs. He obviously has talent, ambition, and is already a great example of providence.

Don't even worry about it. You're a near-lock at half of those schools and I think you have a decent chance at Stanford and Yale...

u have a great shot at all of them, you are 100% in at emory, unless something was wrong in the essays/recs.

People tend to exaggerate the difficulty level, more than it really is, i've seen people get in with your stats at all of these schools. However, it's a crapshoot, especially more so at Yale/Stanford.

i had a similar profile to yours back when i applied 4 years ago in terms of ib, scores, rank, congress debate, being asian, etc. though i got shut out of the ivies, i think you'll get into cornell and the other lower-ranked schools fairly easily. yale/stanford/dartmouth might be a problem.

you'll get into a number of those schools. don't hold your breath on yale or stanford. you should have written your essay about your change of heart and how you discovered the motivation that turned you into a straight-A student. might want to keep this in mind next year for transfer options.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no specialist on these matters. All I'm saying is that I know a few kids with your kinds of numbers, and it's always, always an uphill battle. It's also fairly random; my numbers were not as good as yours, but I managed to show the admission officers in essays, etc... that I was more than just some digits on paper, and different than all the valedictorians applying. That's what it's all about, in my experience.

God has nothing, nothing to do with you getting into college. You need ambition, drive, talent and a bit of luck. Take him out of the picture, and you may be better for it.

also in my defense, my school runs gpa's very differently. a 3.666 unweighted GPA is = to an "A" average. A 3.333 is = to an "A-" average.

So in context, my average is actually somewhere between an A- and an A.

Btw, an A- at my school is 90-92. A solid "A" at my school = 93-97.

This is just FYI.

Yale: 8.9

Stanford: 18.1

Penn: 20.7

Dartmouth: 23.1

Cornell: 49.6

Emory: 54.6

Duke: 60.4

Northwestern: 67.2

Surprisingly high, especially for Duke, plus most of those people aren't Texan of the Month!

Hey, it sounds like you are an AMAZING candidate. I would be shocked if you didn't get into some of those schools. I have the exact SAT composite score as you and so far I've gotten into Dartmouth and Cornell. (Not sure why they are sending stuff early, but whatever) And you seem to have done so much more than me. But you have to remember that all these colleges are ridiculously subjective. It just depends on the particular admissions committe. I'm sure no matter where you go, you'll be happy. So don't waste time stressing over it.
