Air Academy senior named Presidential Scholar

High school senior Preston So can add one more thing to his long list of accomplishments: Presidential Scholar.

Put that one at the top of the list.

The U.S. Department of Education on Monday announced the 141 winners of the prestigious annual award to seniors who have excelled in academics, the arts, leadership and service. So was honored along with Colorado students from Castle Rock, Lakewood and Niwot.

So, 18, is a senior at Air Academy High School in Academy School District 20.

He’s been hired to fix bugs in university computer systems, and has volunteered to improve the teen website for the Pikes Peak Library District, he said in a recent interview with The Gazette. He was selected last month as one of The Gazette’s 20 area Best and Brightest high school seniors.

He plans to attend Harvard University and wants to create a worldwide community service website.

He could not be reached Monday for comment on the Presidential Scholar award.

The scholars programs was launched in 1964 to honor academic achievement, and expanded in 1979 to also recognize students in the visual, literary and performing arts. More than 6,000 students have been honored in 46 years.

This year’s recipients will be honored June 19-2
