Actually, the post below is incorrect. That would be the integral of Sin^2(x). I can't do Sin(x^2), and mathematica gives some fucked up answer I don't understand.

I'm going to baragain that this is one of those problems where you want to rotated sin (x^2) around the x axis and find the integral?

Date: March 6th, 2005 11:42 PM

int x^3 sin(x^2) dx dx

you can't do anything with it by integrating by parts and sunstitution doesn't work.

i thought putting dx twice was a typo, but does this have anything to do with the problem?

so it's integral of u*sinu*constant if you let u=x^2

there are no constants here, i fail to see how that would work. do the double dx's mean anything?

It seems sort of strange. I've never seen anyone integrate over a line like that twice; I mean logically it doesn't make much sense. Integrate out the real life then do it again? My first thinking is that it was put in to make some sort of substitution but nothing is popping out to me at all.

that wouldn't work because du would have to be x^3dx. If u=x^2 then du=2xdx

so x^3=u*x and x cancells out by the 2x

isn't the whole point of u substitution to put everything in terms of u except the constants? i'll play around with it anyway.
