100 Top GLOBAL University Rankings (Newsweek)

Date: August 15th, 2006 1:49 PM Author: sepia knife Web Exclusive Newsweek International Aug. 13, 2006 - In response to the same forces that have propelled the world economy toward global integration, universities have also become more self-consciously global: seeking students from around the world who represent the entire spec trum of cultures and values, sending their own students abroad to prepare them for global careers, offering courses of study that address the challenges of an inter connected world and collaborative research programs to advance science for the benefit of all humanity. To capture these developments, NEWSWEEK devised a ranking of global universities that takes into account openness and diversity, as well as distinction in research.
We evaluated schools on some of the measures used in well-known rankings published by Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Times of London Higher Education Survey. Fifty percent of the score came from equal parts of three measures used by Shanghai Jiatong: the number of highly-cited researchers in various academic fields, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, and the number of articles listed in the ISI Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities indices. Another 40 percent of the score came from equal parts of four measures used by the Times: the percentage of international faculty, the percentage of international students, citations per faculty member (using ISI data), and the ratio of faculty to students. The final 10 percent came from library holdings (number of volumes).

1) Yale > Stanford (out of nothing but personal bias, but no acutal complaints there)
2) Princeton gets a royal screw-job by not having any professional schools (vs UCSF--which doesn't have an undergrad)
3) University of Toronto above Cornell and Chicago is bull (I graduated from U of T--our medical and engineering faculties are amazing--but the UG is poor, and other faculties are the best in Canada, but nowhere near Cornell/Chicago's level)
4) UCLA is great, but a tad too high. JHU is a bit too low.
5) LSE gets screwed over for specializing in economics/political science.
6) Northwestern must have been confused for Northeastern in portions of the criteria
other than that, it's a pretty good list. Much better than the ones published by Jiantong and LHES, with their respective science and regional biases. |

But I do agree with them that Stanford has to be above Yale under these criteria.
But other than that...
How does little Caltech get so high (I'd like to see the raw data)?
Is there a little pro west coast bias here? The top CA schools seem to be doing well relative to the Ivy leauge even though there are only two schools really of that caliber.
Midwest:
I'm a little surprised how high Michigan is.
Why is Wisconsin so much lower than Michigan?
Why is Illinois so far below Minnesota? |

Date: August 15th, 2006 2:48 PM Author: Insane Lay Dartmouth has very small graduate level programs, it (like Brown) is essentially a large LAC with a few professional schools and phd programs attached.
For undergrads, the quality of Dartmouth and Brown is going to be far superior than most of the schools on the list. |
