Subject: Rankings of Hotel Management Schools

These are the hotel school rankings:

1. Cornell

2. Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel & Restaurant Managemenet at University of Houston

3. UNLV

4. Penn State

5. Purdue

6. NYU

7. Boston University

8. FIU

9. Jonhson and Whales (I dont think its worth the money)

Hotel schools are amazing, it really helps you. I think value for money and if you live in Texas go to UH, Hilton just donated another 8 million to get renovation so its going to be amazing. Cornell is at a different level, it will always be at the top because its an IVY and its rep but who wants to live in the super cold!!! come on. One great thing about Hilton is that they use the city as a labotory, like NYU and BU you do!

Of course not, but its an easy and brainless job where you get to feel important every so often bc you will meet some high powered people (but never become one of them). Did Conrad Hilton or Donald Trump or any of those guys have a Hotel Management degree? OF COURSE NOT. Its for middle management types. HTH.

At the time of donald and conrad they barely had hotel schools! The reason Conrad started this school is so that people can come and become succesfull in the industry and not just have a luck on there side and a good idea! It gives them the fundamental education pertaining to hotels. Think about it!

How is Hotel School even higher education? Do you learn any math or science or any real academic subjects? Or just mindless bullshit like managing someone else's hotels?

Yoyu are required to take 2 maths, 2 sciences plus economics and stats. PLus Liberal arts classes. So yeah its a combination in any program be with Cornell, NYU or UH

So you can take something like "Applied Chemistry" as a sci class?

God that program sounds so fucking dumb. Hotel school: for retards who think that working for rich hotel chains somehow makes them rich. Reality: No one who is someone in the hotel biz has a degree in Hotel Management. They are businesspeople who have real educations and possibly an MBA.

how you define a real education one may ask? Hotel degrees are just like business degrees but they are just more specialized in the hospitality field. Its the same thing as business. At the end of the day a hotel is a business. CEO of Lowes Hotel has a hotel degrees. The President of MGM Grand Hotel and Bellagio have hotels degrees from UNLV, The Guy who started HVS consulting (which is huge) as a hotel degree. Many people become succesfull in the hotel industry. You need to take 2 sciences, that can be Bio, Chem, Physics, whatever you wish!

Yes, banking or consulting. They end up with a very good in-depth education on a specific business sector. Grads are very employable.

A old guy who went to Cornell during the depression said the only kids getting jobs at graduation then were the Hotel School grads.

The most credited answer is:

1. Cornell

2. UNLV

3. Penn State

4. Purdue

5. Everyone else (UH, TTU, NYU, USM, etc.)

(In full disclosure, I have the MS from the hotel college at UNLV)

I dont agree, Hilton is much better than Penn and Purdue. Dont tell me you rather go to UNLV than NYU! NYU is so much harder to get into and its alumni is amazing! You need to look at a school as a whole. I think UNLV is good but so is the Hilton College. Nothing will top Cornell though its an ivy and its alumni is too strong

have a dilemma and thought I would ask you for your insight. I am currently a Junior at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. (www.hrm.uh.edu)I think my college is great but overall I think UH has a lot to work on. I

applied for transfer admission to New York University and Boston University and I was accepted into Boston and still waiting on NYU. Currently I spend about $10,000 a year at the University of Houston. Boston or New

York because they are private and highly ranked will cost me about $35,000++ each year. Do you think it is worth spending the extra money

on Boston or New York? My major is going to be the same at both schools. The average salary from my major is about $42K it doesnt matter if u went to BU or UH, because thats how much the "management programs" pay at like Starwood, Hilton, Marriott. Some even less, MGM Mirage is like $30K for there MAP management program.

I feel our generation is fixated on

college rankings, it becomes apart of who you are. Although my college is ranked high in the hospitality realm, the

overall picture still remains that the University of Houston is still a fourth tier school. Boston University is a highly ranked and prestigious school however, their hospitality program still lags

behind the Hilton College. This is quite the conundrum! I would appreciate any light you can shed on this situation.

People don't seem to realize that a degree in hospitality administration is really just a business degree that uses the service industry as a focus. You learn the same accounting, finance, marketing, etc. as you would in a business program. It really doesn't restrict you to working only in hotels. I have a degree in hospitality, immediately went to work for a consulting firm doing finance because that was my specialty within the hotel area. I decided to branch out a bit and my degree didn't hinder me at all. Sure, those who stay behind the front desk or stick with rooms operations will keep the low paying jobs. You just need to use your degree smartly. I chose finance because I know that I can be very successful in it, even if I leave hotels for good.

Anyway, I agree with you about it being a business degree essentially, just with a focus. I got a hotel degree from Cornell and went to work immediately at a business that had absolutely nothing to do with hotels (and I'm making more than most of my classmates are/will be because of this).

There's the jealousy/denial factor involved here. people who are under the impression that either going to law school or majoring in econ are the only two paths to lucrative careers just hate it when they're reminded that other people can make it there, too, and often just as easily as the econ/law people can.

Exactly. They assume that they are on some intellectual high ground with their purely academic degrees, and then they assume that us business or hospitality majors don't know a thing of academics or intellect. Couldn't be more false. I did a philosophy minor, took many high level "academic" electives in areas such as english, poli sci and history, and did just as well in those courses.

I wouldn't even call econ at the undergraduate level "purely academic." most of the econ majors I knew in undergrad (which comprised about 60% of the overall student body--no joke) were preprofessional hacks.

Its a shame he didn't use that degree to its potential. Its all about the contacts you make. My finance professor knew every hotel controller and every consulting company CFO in Boston. He gave me some great contacts and I immediately found a solid job. Like I said, the only people who have trouble are those who stay only in hotel rooms operations, in positions such as bellhops or front desk. It really takes alot of work to move up in that area.
