$20k: Live in Sunset Park in Brooklyn, a Hispanic neighborhood with roommates. Don't go out unless to a house party. Wear Old Navy.
$40k: Live in Harlem with a roommate in a two bedroom. Don't go out much, but still hit up happy hour from time to time. Wear Gap.
$60k: Live in the East Village in a shoebox studio or in a smallish two bedroom with a roommate. Go out on weekends and to happy hour. Cook at home a lot. Wear Banana Republic.
$80k: Live in the Village or LES, Upper East side in your own larger studio (not a shoebox, but not much larger) or in a small one bedroom (UES). Go out on weekends and have a good time. Not so worried about what you spend, but no bottle service.
$100k: Have a smallish 1-bedroom in the Village or a studio in SoHo. Go out when you want, but don't ball. Eat well. Wear Polo shirts and nice shoes.
$120k: Have a one bedroom to yourself in a nice part of MFH. Or a largish place on the UES. Go out anytime, but don't ball. Not worried about money, but are not stacking cash. Wear upper scale clothes.
$150k - $300k: Have a nice two bedroom to yourself in MFH with nice furnishings and nice clothes. Nothing top of the line, but you live well and go on vacation every 6 months (or at least could afford to).
Remember that few people own a car in the city, this saves you a ton that can go toward other expenses. And living with a GF can cut way back on the above if she has a jerb...

40k, single, live in an outer boro, do fine.
MFH? add at least 10k to live like a non-savage.
I am talking about balling, just normal everyday living for a 25 year old.
Live well? 80+ and more like six figures.
all of the above assumes one bedroom, no roommates and not walking to work.
Or, just do Hoboken/Jersey City.
