by the firm as a whole (i.e. you could get fired more easily) or by random associates and partners who think it's weird?

I think everyone

however, the associates would actually be cooler than the partners.

From what I have seen of female PT associates, partners and associates generally don't want to be on the same team as them as they are not going to be able to give 110%/killself on deals or cases. this leads to them getting less than optimal assignments. That being said, people are largely sympathetic to them (with the exception of some asshats), because they are doing it for their kids.

I have seen a few male senior associates/of counsel do four days a week, I think for family reasons in each case. I have no idea how that is balanced with deals. Maybe it's in reality more like four days plus one telecommuting plus a slightly lower billables expectation.

I think they are senior enough that it does not matter much. But I doubt any will make partner.

anyone do this in corporate, specifically m&a, securities or finance, where deals require 24/7 attention during peak times?

how is it possible?

It's really tough. I know one transactional attorney who did this and she still works 24/7 when required, she just tries to take more time off between deals. But I spoke to her a couple weeks ago and it isn't working out like she hoped.

This never works in the long run. You end up with 80% of the pay and 100% of the hours. Also, it doesn't work for the same reason that big law is tough on everyone -- there is no set schedule. How can you commit to picking your kids up at 3 pm on certain days and having them in the afternoon if you are in trial or a deposition? What if you have a deal closing and there is a 5 pm conference call or you need to go to the printer? Biglaw is the opposite of what is needed in order to make a part-time system work. There are probably rare exceptions (some counsel come to mind), but overall it's a tough deal to work out.

Not to be argumentative, but almost every large general practice firm in NYC that I can think of has a T&E group.

Wrong. And T&E is a marginal practice group at those big firms that do have it (WFG, Debevoise, Schulte, etc.).

It may be marginal, but they offer it to be full service to clients. It's precisely because it is marginal that allows someone to easily work part time.

The people I know in T&E working full time basically work part time compared to most other biglawyers i know.

Yes, I know a number of senior associates/of counsel males that do this for family reasons. Unless you let the firm bitch you around, there is no problem with this provided that you add value with your work. If you have been kept around long enough to be senior associate/of counsel, you probably add value.
