There have been studies that have shown that your happiness can depend on the success of those around you. But with a twist!
The worse off people around you are compared to yuorself, the better you feel about yourself and the happier you are.
Example:
Friend loses job. You feel bad for him/her, but deep down you think "Thank god I have a job, even if it is shit. I'm better off that him/her."
If everyone around you is doing really well, but you are not doing as well, you become less satisfied with life and are not as happy. Even if you are doing just fine.

I have a few good friends who are in the start-up scene on their ways to what will probably be substantial paydays, and a few friends on the BIGPOLITICS path (2-3 guys who will legit be governors/senators in 20 years). I have sometimes secretly hoped they fail out of jealousy, but this really is a beta attitude.
In life, you're not competing with the people immediately around you. You're competing with yourself.
