Subject: That is SOOO NOT credited

While certainly acceptable, Brooks/Hickey/Paul Stuart are the lower end of higher end suits, akin to Rolex/Brietling/Cartier for watches. Above them are Valentino, Zegna, Brioni, and Turnbull & Asser. I could name many others, but these are just examples. Btw, Versace and Armani are for night clubs, not business.

Subject: Most prestigious of all---

A custom tailored suit, which you can get in Hong Kong and parts of Asia for about $300-$500, obviously a lot more in US and Europe. A custom tailored suit will pwn any name brand in the way it looks since nothing you buy from a store will fit you and be cut the same way.

Example:

I remember a teacher in middle school telling me that her son got a gift from someone to get five shirts custom made for his body from some nice tailoring store. She said it was a really impressive look, so yes, I believe what you're saying.

I don't particularly understand all of the hatred towards suits from Macys and the like. I wouldn't buy a suit from Wal-Mart, but while a suit from a decent department store isn't the greatest in the world, it's perfectly workable and looks decent if you treat it right.

Sure, you're absolutely right in that Brooks/Hickey are not the finest suits in the world. But for a noob asking about suit brands, I figured Brioni/Kiton may be just a tad out of his budget.

Please post extremely prestigious suits that I can purchase for under $150.

Prestige is my #1 concern, and price is no object up to the $150 ceiling. I'd really like something that is immediately recognizable, such that people will say, "Did you see GULCTTTL's _______ suit? I bet he spent almost $150 on that! Can't blame him though, he looks great."

A suit should be dry cleaned a few times a year. If a suit looks good for 3 years for $250, it's not a bad deal.

Now, I have no opinion on whether these suits look good, but if they did, it wouldn't be a bad price.

It's sometimes better to have a new suit tailored at the place where you buy it. That way, if they fuck it up, it's pretty easy to get the suit replaced. A third-party tailor fucks your suit up, and there's no way the store takes it back.

Picking a good tailor is like picking a good car mechanic... just gotta talk to people.

That's what I'll have to do. The one time I tried to find an outside tailor (for something really basic--shortening the sleaves 1/2 inch) it was worse when I got it back than when I gave it to them. Unfortunately I was leaving on a three-month trip the next day so I couldn't have them redo it.

How do you fuck up sleeves?

You should have told them to redo it while you wait.

korean tailors in DC fuck up sleeves all the time. i used to get so fucking pissed (i'd only bring in old blazers and shit, but still).

Yeah, it was an old blazer. They mainly did dry cleaning, so I guess it was obviously a mistake to go to them for any tailoring no matter how easy it should be.

both answers extremely credited. the first one is important to always remember.

good tailors are out there, but you can't go by price or anything else. gotta just hunt around (a bad one will be really bad - a good one will make a burlap sack look good).

Nope. Actually, the sleeves on them fit better than on the suit that I bought for myself and never bothered to have tailored. I doubt they fit great, but they were my size.

You guys are clueless. Brooks and Joe Banks are both shitty. Why you ask? Both suits use shitty fused construction and are cut for the bodies of 50 year old men from Chicago.

Unless you want to drop 2K on semi-custom Italian suits, the only way to go is with travelling tailors from Hong Kong and Vietnam. These are the only suits that I buy now. The quality and fit is >>>>> brooks or banks. I'll dig up the links for the two guys that I use if anyone is interested.

This Hemrajani guy made me one blue windowpane suit. His pricing is pretty much in line with low end off the rack at brooks brothers. I was pretty pleased with the result.

http://www.wwchan.com/

Chan is the best I've used by far. You pay alot more, about 1.2K per suit, but you basically get a 4K custom suit in return. I've got a solid navy and a solid charcoal from Chan. The only downside is that it takes 3 months to get your suit after you're measured. I also get shirts from Chan, which you can order online.

Yeah. They're way better. I wouldn't say it's as great a diff as between brooks suits and chan suits, but if you're going to end up paying $100 for the brooks shirt anyway, why not get the custom shirt?

Mytailor.com above will do custom shirts for that price (actually cheaper if you go with their lowest quality cloth). Check their website for when they'll be in your area and you can go in and have them measure you, look at fabric samples in person, and talk about what options you want on your shirt. If you're confident about your measurements and what you want, you can just order from their webpage.

There's other Hong Kong tailors, but I don't really know anything about them.

Even landsend will do custom shirts for cheap, but I wasn't super fond of the one I got from them. I'll probably stick with Hong Kong.

This place actually does super cheap shirts (~$50) that are pretty nice. However, their service sucks, and they'll take 6 months if you don't call them in HK and harrass them constantly. I used them once and was pleased, but their service isn't worth the extra $50 to me.

Not sure why you need a custom shirt for OCI. No one can tell anyway because you'll be wearing a jacket the whole time.

lol. the traveling tailor is a fucking gimmick. you're buying a rack suit that is then adjusted to your body. no different than BB, except lower quality. go fuckyourself.

btw - BB non-iron have ALWAYS been cotton - heavy yet fine weave broadcloth.

Nope. First you pick the fabric, of which you have a couple thousand choices. The fabrics on mine are Zegna, which = much higher quality than brooks. Then you tell him EXACTLY how you want the suit to look, such as how high you want the lapels to be, how you want the pockets to look, how you want the shoulders to look, how many buttons you want on the sleeves, how you want the lapel to roll, etc. Then the busy asian guy spends a solid 30 mins measuring you. There's no way to do this without making the suit from scratch. They'd need at least 10,000 variations of this "rack suit" that you refer to. You obviously don't know shit.

edit: yes, he will do it via dhl. I think its somewhere north of 500 U.S. for a top rate suit.

http://www.samstailor.biz/formal/suits/about-sam.html

Agreed that some people really are clueless about suits. I do think that there isn't a great big of difference between Brooks Bros and Jos or some Macy's stuff. There is a HUGE difference however between custom tailored from HK/semi custom Brioni, etc and BB/Paul Stuart. To sum it up:

custom made/$2500 suit>>>>>>>>>>$800 suit>>$300 suit

Jose Bank is crap. But the argument about needing to dry clean their suits all the time is also crap. If your suit wrinkles, have it pressed before you wear it again. What's so fucking hard about that?

They say you're not supposed to press a dirty suit because the dirt gets set into the fabric.

There's aways the shower steam trick, but I don't know how well that works on shit Jose Bank suits.

When I was a poor and only had three suits I had my suits pressed and there were no problems. When you're dealing with a couple hundred bucks, who gives a shit? I also used a hand steamer that worked very well. http://www.jiffysteamer.com/esteam.asp

Now I can afford good suits (red checkered flannel of course) and made the smart decision to work at a place where I don't have to wear one every day, so I don't need to worry about not having a clean/pressed suit in the rotation.

You made the "smart decision" not to work at Wachtell or Cravath? Or perhaps you mean that you did not have the option to work at a place where you would have to wear a suit every day?
