Only MAF at how polarizing shitlibbery has become recently. It's like they take every liberal position and assume that the opposite is by default the reptile position, regardless of the economics involved. Life is more nuanced than that, fortunately.

"The assurance of a certain minimum income for everyone, or a sort of floor below which nobody need fall even when he is unable to provide for himself, appears not only to be wholly legitimate protection against a risk common to all, but a necessary part of the Great Society in which the individual no longer has specific claims on the members of the particular small group into which he was born."

"The basic conception of classical liberalism, which alone can make decent and impartial government possible, is that government must regard all people as equal, however unequal they may in fact be, and that in whatever manner the government restrains (or assists) the action of one, so it must, under the same abstract rules, restraint (or assist) the actions of all others. Nobody has special claims on government because he is either rich or poor, beyond the assurance of protection against all violence from anybody and the assurance of a certain flat minimum income if things go wholly wrong. Even to take notice of the factual inequality of individuals and to make this the excuse of any discriminating coercion, is a breach of the basic terms on which free man submits to government."

This is like the standard position on welfare that almost all libertarians take:

Basic income combined with elimination of "hidden" welfare policies.

Shitlibs advocate for basic income but they want it in ADDITION to all the programs we have now. Dudes like Hayek/Friedman just want basic income, the idea being it's compassionate enough to not just let people rot and die but it doesn't result in all these people living off welfare for like their entire life.

there is a libertarian spectrum from simple economic cons/social libs to anarcho-capitalists.

the idea of basic income plus dismantling of some of the current welfare state which, in theory, would rendered redundant due to the basic income is not anaethema to libertarism per se.

It respects the individual more because it allows him to spend it whatever way he wants. That's libertarian. It's disgustingly patriarchal to be like here's some stamps you can only buy certain food with. It also has the added benefit of having almost no administrative overhead. So you wouldn't have the vast bureaucracy of govt jobs that libertarians hate. And it's more efficient to boot so we could give more direct cash to ppl.

you're just making shit up to fit your false narrative.

once you've gone bitch and start accepting handouts, the libertarian principles of self-determination don't apply. you have forfeited those arguments by being a mooch. to the extent you are given any self-determination for how to spend your welfare, that's something you should be grateful for. it's not something you are entitled to.

it's not a libertarian position, though.

at most, it's a libertarian economist trying to figure out the least disgusting pill to swallow.

once those economists leave their libertarian base, they are just choosing a pragmatic position along the liberal/conservative continuum.

plus, your use of 'most' is specious. how many 'libertarian' economists are there?

I don't know, but Friedman and Hayek were YUGE supporters. Nixon tried to implement it. To the extent libertarianism only means near anarchy with no proper role of govt beyond courts (but very few enforceable laws) and defense spending (but maybe only in response to an imminent threat) then sure. But that's a mythical land that will never exist. Pragmatic libertarians are just conservatives who aren't down with the moralist wing of the party and who want to limit govt at every turn. So basic income is a great solution to the problem of the administrative welfare state

incentivizing welfare is the wrong approach. it should be burdensome and shame inducing. just giving losers money and thinking it will work out is naïve, wishful thinking.

you know how many fast food places are hiring right now? all of them

you know how many fast food places have been hiring the past 4 years? all of them

you know how many fast food workers are better than welfare recipients?
