I know a guy who did went from NYC biglaw lit to hanging a shingle way the fuck up in the Adirondacks. Tiny ass town of less than 1000 people. His wife was from there though so they had family there.

Chilling it in the Adirondacks beats the crap of striving in NYC.

Yeah that's a problem. I can see every lawyer with no prospects doing this and working for pennies. Can I beat them by having biglaw experience and a top LS? By having good family and other connections in the area?

the last part, hell yes. your school and biglaw experience will give you zero advantages, however

Some older lawyers and judges claim that there is a lot of money to be made in smalltown but I don't know if they know WTF they are talking about.

depends on your overhead and client base. also RETAINER RETAINER RETAINER.

My dad, before he came a judge, was LOVED by the old ladies in the town he grew up in. He got ALL their estate business...and as they started dropping off, well he did pretty well.

you also need the occassional quarter million dollar personal injury lawsuit, which frankly, happens all the time. usually car accidents and motorcycle shit

Man. This sounds enjoyable but also kinda hard.

My biggest problem will be thinking "why the fuck did i go deep in debt at a top law school instead of free at local TTT"

i know completely. i only went to a top 20 but i never even interviewed in law school...ended up at a consulting firm in chicago and came home four years later and took the bar...now i am at a relatively small shop.

what sucks is the various shit that comes up legally...its impossible to become a master at something unless you specialize...and you cant do that in a smaller community

the main issue, initially, will be the different skill sets you'll need to apply.

advising a client on the pros and cons of employing an irrevocable trust is far different than the shit you undoubtedly did in biglaw.

go for it. i would go somewhere near hometown, though...where you have more connections.

LMAO @ xoxo in 2012:

Diesel's life is 180 because he can't pass a test of minimal competency to be a lawyer and thus enjoys the "benefit" of avoiding law (while having a four year sinkhole in his resume and having no income whatsoever).

Moving to some hillbilly town and being a country lawyer is 180.
