Moving to DC for BigLaw after school. What neighborhoods are most credited if want to be in a trendy young professional neighborhood, fairly close to center of the city. Present thinking is Logan Circle/Dupont Circle/U Street. Is this right?

Old Town Alexandria or Arlington. If you MUST be in DC, Georgetown or Adams Morgan. Some places around the capital are not all that bad anymore, but you'll still get shot at. You'll still need a car pretty much no matter where you live in DC.

adams morgan does not really fit with the other examples there.

Dupont, logan circle, parts of capitol hill are very nice.

georgetown is great but its a bitch to get in and out of.

if your office is in foggy bottom VA is not a bad idea.

definitive list, starting with the best:

1. Georgetown (townhouse north of M street but south of reservoir) (only if you don't mind driving to work)

2. Arlington (clarendon/courthouse)

3. Old Town Alexandria (townhouse within 3/4 miles of king street)(if you are 30+ years old and don't mind leaving at 7:30 to beat traffic)

4. the West End

5. Georgetown south of M

6. McLean (if 35+ years old)

7. Penn Quarter

9. Palisades/Foxhall

9. Dupont/Logan/Thomas/etc.

10. Burlieth (if 35+ years old)

11. Foggy Bottom

12. Capitol Hill (no more than 4 blocks from the capitol/SOBs/HOBs)

13. Bethesda

14. Kalorama/Woodly Park

15. Cinatown

16. "Gentrified" DC neighborhoods: columbia heights, adams morgan, southeast, eastern market, navy row, 14th street

17. the trash: H Street, Trinidad, Howard/Shaw, PG County, Anacostia, etc.

probably forgot something, but that's a pretty definitive list

ballston is admittedly the worst of the Arlington corridor. i don't live there. navy row is "marine barracks" or whatever the fuck that neighborhood is called. eastern market is borderline ghetto and is not the same as capitol hill. the only cr place to live on capitol hill is a townhouse 1 block from russell SOB which you use to bang interns during the day.

One block from russell? Thats either office buildings or union station? There arent really row houses there. Have you even been to Eastern Market in the last 3-4 years. Its where most members, who live on the Hill, live now. You can't get a two bedroom within walking distance of that area for south of 750.

Depends on how much your vehicle is worth. You pay 5% on the assessed value of your car that exceeds 3k. Thus, you'd pay $1,000 on a car with an assessed value of 23k. My car is assessed at around $7,000 so I only pay 200 in personal property tax.

The income tax difference is approximately 3k between DC and Virginia, assuming an income of 160k. Marginal tax rate for Virginia is 5.75% whereas the top tax rate for associates in DC is 8.5%.

there are very few hipsters in DC and basically none in u st/logan/dupont. DC cannot support the same number of educated, low-paid "creative class" types that you have in nyc. if dc really was a draw for them we'd start rising rents in anacostia. the only neighborhoods that i can see being called hipsterish would be columbia heights, petworth, mtp, and maybe some scattered areas of northeast.

logan/dupont/u st are walkable to downtown, next to various bus/metro lines, and have lots of bars/nightlife/etc. they're definitely the best places to be for a young professional in dc.

no, it's not. i don't think that going to shows at velvet lounge from time to time or wearing skinny jeans on the weekend really makes someone a hipster, especially if they have a law degree. h st ne has been described as a "hipster" neighborhood but it's the same exact people in any other dc neighborhood chilling out in cooler bars.

many of the people on this bort described as hipsters are just regular yuppie types (or low paid recent grads) who like to eat thai food and throw vegetarian dinner parties.

ride the L train from manhattan through williamsburg to bushwick/ridgewood at 1am on a saturday and tell me that dc has anything other than a token number of the sorts of (white) people that you see.

Here is the real answer and its rather simple:

Step one: If you lived in NYC, but not MFH, would you rather live in Brooklyn or Hoboken? If Brooklyn, then DC. If Hoboken then Arlington.

Step two: If you chose, DC, then visit each neighborhood and see what you like. If you chose Arlington, visit the Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs, Teds Montana Grill and Don Pablos and see which one you want to be closest too.

clarendon/courthouse is more smaller chains with like 10 locations that don't even realize are chains until you go to their website or visit bethesda and realize they have all the exact same places.

it's better than all the hipster shit in DC anyways.

Lived at 17th and P NW - that's probably one of the most credited blocks/areas in all of NW DC to live, especially if work is walking distance from there. Best ubran living with restaurants, nightlife, etc.

But, as someone about to find a place in NW, probably will not be moving back because I can't pay MFH prices ($2300-$2700 for a decent studio/1BR around there).

Palisades/Foxhall/Upper NW (near intersection of Mass. and Wisconsin) offer better value and more open green space ($1700-$2100).

Arlington: Slightly cheaper than DC, still urban, 10 minute metro ride to DC, less taxes (good for biglaw), plenty of luxury buildings near shopping/bars/restaurants, safer, no bums or crackheads, functional government (ie: the voters don't keep re-electing Marion Barry), highest concentration of people with college degrees in the country. Unless you want the hipster lifestyle, what possibly makes DC better? It's not more "prestigious." It's DC, not the upper-fucking-east side of MFH.

The taxes work out about the same when you factor in property tax (on cars in va...).

Also I find the functional nature of Arl govt to be kind of annoying: Example 1, its pretty much impossible to get your car actually towed in DC in areas patroled by mpd and not fed police..it has to be parked illegally for like 3 days. They are fucking vigilant about it in Arl. Example 2, the dc car inspections are all done by the city and are a total joke. Everyone passes. People with newer cars actually fail in VA.

there's much more to do in clarendon than ballston. clarendon has whole foods + TJ + safeway not too far. the harris teeter is also a good 10 minute walk from the metro, at least. clarendon strictly dominates ballston no matter how you slice it.

So do I. I wouldn't live in McLean or Fairfax. Clarendon and Courthouse are very walkable, filled with good restaurants (admittedly mostly chains but more local ones now, too), and it's like a ten min metro ride to DC if you want to take advantage of what DC has. I don't see any difference between living in Capitol Hill and taking the metro to Dupont and living in Arlington and doing the same.

Agreed on the capitol hill thing, but that's why you live in a place like Dupont, U St. or Logan. That way you're within walking distance of bars and restaurants and can hop on the metro to hit up other places.

I think it's best to live in Dupont, cuz at least you have access to the red line, then. The most annoying thing about DC is how infrequently metro trains show up at nights and on weekends. Let's say you live a 10 min walk from Courthouse. Getting to a bar on U Street, door to door, can take you like 45 minutes. That's ridiculous. Even Dupont will take you 35 min minimum.

plus you can just walk it from foggy bottom depending on where exactly you're going and what the weather is like. i feel stupid going 5 extra stops plus a transfer just to travel the few blocks from there to dupont.

I'll work downtown DC, my wife in Mclean.

For tax purposes: 220K combo salary.

Me debt pwnd hard, so low price is a factor. Want something safe, decent space, but don't need super luxury.

Wife wants orange line corridor. We don't go out a lot, maybe once a week to dinner or something. I'm a clean cut midwestern bro, so I don't need Yuppie shit. We have two little ankle biter dogs.

How much are your cars worth? The tax situation will work out so that you'll save a bit more than ~3k in income tax. The car tax is 0.05(Assessed Value of Car - 3k). I'd recommend Ballston or Virginia Square, maybe Clarendon. It'll be easier for her to get travel to McClean and it'll only add a few minutes to your commute to DC on the metro. Rosslyn is my least favorite area of the Orange Line corridor.

keep it in the father's name and/or registered in another state. even if your building gives your car info over to the county they only charge like $100/yr, better than the regular tax.

Rosslyn is alight. It has some good restaurants, a liquor store, and a safeway. The center is mostly office buildings and the metro is sort of annoying to walk to (lots of hills plus buildings get in your way) and is a mess bc of all the bus transfers and the giant escalator you have to walk down. You also have much better transit options for getting into the city (can take both blue and orange lines and can take the circulator bus to dupont).

It's better than Ballston but Clarendon or courthouse is a better option though since rosslyn isn't really cheaper. Crystal city or pentagon city also aren't bad if you want to save more $.

BUMP for anyone who's walked up 14th Street from P to U in the last THREE WEEKS.

SEVEN new restaurants have opened on 14th in that time frame. I've never seen a neighborhood go from slow burn to exponential growth in such a short period. There's still a damn homeless shelter across the street from Bang & Olufsen.

I live in the Logan area and would not live anywhere else. Anyone equating non-chain, chef-driven, seasonal restaurants with "hipster culture" is spending too much time at the Pentagon City Mall.
