I was out at a restaurant today getting a power shake and this guy i knew from undergrad (buff, alpha guy in workout clothes) was beside me.. we used to share a rez together in undergrad. For some reason I just... avoided him. Didn't talk with him, pretended I didn't see him - I wouldn't know what to say, I wasn't really that close to him (we were just in the same apt suite) and i was studying all day for the bar and just felt exhausted. He is this typical frat bro, was checking his phone/dialing while beside me.. then i saw him sitting down, waiting for his shake, and i didnt talk with him.

This happened another time today.. just saw someone and avoided him, because i was scared the convo would turn to shit since i wasn't in the mood for talking. I didn't feel energetic or like i could pull off a fake smile/convo and all that shit. Is this normal or some sign of social anxiety or something? Just today I resolved that if I run into anyone I know from LS in the library or something while studying for the bar, I'd act all energetic, happy, change my tone of voice to be a bit more enthusiastic sounding rather than flat-like, but I think I got scared that i couldn't pull it off.

I used to be in student politics and could pull off a different persona all the time.. and now i'm scared I can't even hold a convo.

not wanting to talk to people you never liked and haven't seen in ages is normal but you still probably have social anxiety.

why. I feel like I should have still summoned up the courage to talk with this guy, even if he did sound annoying on the phone and we prob have nothing in common besides gym interests... on second thought, I could have talked with him about that.

I have this fear of not knowing how to continue a conversation and awkward silent pauses. Does that mean i have social anxiety disorder? I think i have some social anxiety but it's not really severe enough to constitute a disorder. I just used to be really good at talking with random people and seeming energetized - did it all the time in studnt elections, for instance. And now I seem to have lost that skill. Need to get it back. Maybe some practice and regular exercise will help.

I consider myself to be very outgoing, but I don't see how it's terribly unnatural to not have any interest in carrying on a conversation when you're exhausted and likely have nothing in common with the person. That said, I would have at least acknowledged with a head nod (downward) or something so as not to look like a total aspie tool.

so what, this typical. people avoid one another all the time

you really spend way way way way too much time thinking about yourself and whether any given thought you have or action you take is "normal"
