I ask because an ambitious, talented friend of mine is moving away to DC because of his fiancee's job. I thought he wanted to run for office here and was surprised he is leaving.
I actually have a couple of friends doing this but he was the most ambitious one, or so i thought. it surprised me.

I have. I moved from a big city to small town for it. Thought it was a marriage track relationship. It was not as huge of a jump because I had a job lined up already and thought I knew the area well. She's cute, and we had been dating for over 2.5 years, and our families were intertwined.
Things changed. Quickly. And very badly. She's going through some legit mental problems and it's too much to handle at times.
The good news is that you can probably recover if you're younger and not in a ton of debt. You can always explain away one bad move like that. Sure, biglaw firms might not listen to you, but most humane employers will understand.
The bad news is that you can very easily get drawn into the place. Or never leave.

Well, I went from having a life in a big city and all these hobbies and things I wanted to pursue, to living in ARE COUNTRY and being depressed and suicidal, megaposting on xo for several months after my shitlaw firm FIRED ME without cause or justification after only a few months of work.
They paid me a shitty severance but I did win unemployment, so with low COL I don't lose a ton of my savings. Now I am trying to find another job and get back to where I was.
Best case scenario: I lose a year of my life but gain some good perspective and stories.
Worst case scenario: I'm going to manage a gas station.

My mental issues or hers?
Mine are improving.
Hers def existed before, but they ebb and flow.
