If you were in a marriage track LTR, engaged or even married, would you move if the girl wanted to? What if it meant potentially sacrificing something professionally?

I ask because an ambitious, talented friend of mine is moving away to DC because of his fiancee's job. I thought he wanted to run for office here and was surprised he is leaving.

I actually have a couple of friends doing this but he was the most ambitious one, or so i thought. it surprised me.

Really? DC proper cannot get to congress and DC city council is kind of shitty. I suppose you could run for the VA legislature or congress out of NOVA but wouldn't it be hard for a transplant non-Virginian to win? Certainly it would be easier in NOVA than in other parts of Virginia but wouldnt it still be hard?

Probably easier to get groomed at a right wing think tank, meet with big $$$ donors, get a reputation as a reliable partisan, and rise through the ranks of the defense department before running for Senator than handing out fliers in Mesquite, TX.

Hmm. Ive been around this stuff a bit and there really is no proxy for a long track record of involvement in the district you want to run for and for meeting the players in that location.

Cruz's parents, who had both attended college in Texas, returned there when Cruz was about four years old.[13]

I have. I moved from a big city to small town for it. Thought it was a marriage track relationship. It was not as huge of a jump because I had a job lined up already and thought I knew the area well. She's cute, and we had been dating for over 2.5 years, and our families were intertwined.

Things changed. Quickly. And very badly. She's going through some legit mental problems and it's too much to handle at times.

The good news is that you can probably recover if you're younger and not in a ton of debt. You can always explain away one bad move like that. Sure, biglaw firms might not listen to you, but most humane employers will understand.

The bad news is that you can very easily get drawn into the place. Or never leave.

Well, I went from having a life in a big city and all these hobbies and things I wanted to pursue, to living in ARE COUNTRY and being depressed and suicidal, megaposting on xo for several months after my shitlaw firm FIRED ME without cause or justification after only a few months of work.

They paid me a shitty severance but I did win unemployment, so with low COL I don't lose a ton of my savings. Now I am trying to find another job and get back to where I was.

Best case scenario: I lose a year of my life but gain some good perspective and stories.

Worst case scenario: I'm going to manage a gas station.

I don't have a jerb there. Right now I am hoping I can pull off the best case scenario: get a job back in my old city where I have some connections and live right now off unemployment and dat low cost of living tip. It takes a full day of driving, but I can get to see friends/family from here, too, which I enjoy doing.

only move if the destination is one that offers a good market for your skills and a reasonable cost of living for one person if you split up.
