"You're Beautiful" illustrates the narcissism of love songs.

In his hit single, "You're Beautiful", perhaps his most misunderstood song, he explodes the romantic myth. He picks the most vapid cliches to praise the beloved, while reserving for himself the choicest adjectives ("My life is brilliant. My love is pure.") and even supernatural agency (how many angels does this pinhead require?). "We shared a moment..." But notice that nothing's shared. Love is a fleeting, masturbatory moment, not an inspiration to eternal truth, as for Plato, Dante, and Petrarch.
Late capitalism has deprived us of our vocabulary for authentically expressing love. Even the guitar sounds tinny. But how do we know Blunt isn't just a shitty artist who can't write a song to save his worthless life? We can't. Therein lies his genius. |
