The problem for the Israelis is that they need a strike option, and for that, they need leverage on the United States. There's a lot of suspicion the US will try to stay on the sidelines, at least publicly.
2012 is an election year, and if the Israelis strike now, they can count on popular pressure for Obama to take a harder line than he otherwise might.
Iran's in breach of multiple IAEA/UN mandates, but good luck getting those agencies to enforce anything.
Russians doesn't have much leverage with Iran, and they're even more pissed at the Israelis for covertly soliciting Azerbaijani airfields. |
