if your going to do all the work necessary to raise that much money, does a job in Congress really seem like a good payoff for that much work?
especially considering that every 2 years your opponents will hire opposition researchers to comb through your life and try to put the most embarressing aspect of your life in television commercials about how much you suck
seems like a shitty deal

It doesn't sound particularly fun calling up rich people and asking them for money. Ha, I'm reminded of a scene from the Wire (Season 4, I believe) where Carcetti's staff locks him in a room and he raises like $30 grand in three hours. I think I'd have the same disparaging attitude about calling up rich assholes you don't enjoy to try and get money from them (every two years, no less) but I think I would be good at it. I think I have the soft skills to be competitive, possibly even make it work.
The fun part of the job to me is the policy stuff. The politicking. Being on committees. Having a big staff on the Hill and in your district offices. Having a driver. Scheming with consultants for opportunities in higher offices. Schmoozing with other Congresspeople and lobbyists. Going out on the town and being the center of attention at events. Giving speeches, writing them. Going on TV once in a while, or writing an op-ed. Being in a position where people actually care about what you have to say about a specific issue. Seems like a pretty sweet gig if you can manage to become entrenched enough to cultivate an aura of inevitability about your re-election. |

Being a Congressman fucking sucks. Second year associates get paid more, half your city will hate your guts, you have no real power for at least the first decade, moving from Congress to Sen or Gov in New York is virtually impossible and when you do leave, it will probably be because someone else kicked your ass by revealing embarassing information or because you took a vote and now the very people you thought were your friends hate you.
Also, as a politician you have to constantly worry that some little thing you did broke the law. At worst you go to jail, at the least people will think you're unethical.

Date: May 16th, 2012 11:04 AM Author: scarlet hairless therapy I've toyed around with the idea of getting into lobbying, but I don't know really know how to familiarize myself with it short of trying to get a job at a lobbying firm or the government relations practice group of a firm.
My dad is a solo who represents a lot of local RE developers/landowners who constantly lobby local pols to put pressure on their appointed community boards to ease zoning regulations for a project here, a project there. They have told him repeatedly that they would love to give him that lobbying business if he wanted it. My dad's nature is not that of a lobbyist, and he's asked me if I want to start something up. I just don't know where to begin without going somewhere else and getting experience there first.
Any ideas? Do you have familiarity with the field? |

Stay for a while and impress people. After 2-3 years, apply to be chief of staff on the Senate side. If you can't do that, become a legislative director then work your way to COS. Do an awesome job. Keep your boss happy. Be loyal.
Then wait until your party is in the majority, then get scooped up by a company or firm to lobby. Make 600k.
end of story. |
