have a govt atty job lined up for the fall, but am currently applying for some internships for the next few months. how do i list my other position on my resume? "prospective attorney"? "future attorney"? those sound really weird. any ideas?

Italicize the description was what I was told by some attorneys who had to deal with the same issue before passing the bar

Greetings,

If a resume came across my desk that listed a job that hadn't started yet, I'd toss it in the trash. Obviously you don't know what a resume is for. It's to show your experience, not the mere fact that someone thinks you have potential.

You handle this by putting in your cover letter something like "I'm looking to do some whatever legal work before I begin my job with PREFTIGIOUS THING this fall"

This is different. Firms often will hire 3Ls with clerkships to do a summer before they start their clerkship with the intent on bringing them on full-time after the clerkship. In that situation, you need to list the clerkship.

Greetings,

PSA nobody who is going to hire a dood for a month cares what kind of otter you have. If anything, having a job lined up is a signal that you don't actually want to impress the boss (because you only need $ for a month or two before you bail).

Greetings,

Need more info on these internships because the decisionmaker's motivation may be to hire someone who might actually take a FT otter after he passes the bar.

Estimate how long you'll hold the position and then list the job as you would any other, but with start and end dates both in the future.

Why, with a job lined up, would you choose to work an unpaid internship in the interim instead of, I don't know, basically anything else.

a resume shows the experience you will bring to them. so, for instance, if you're applying for a summer job and you haven't started your spring job, you can list the spring job and say "beginning February (or whatever it may be)". but, if you're applying for a spring job, and you have a summer job, you don't list the summer job, because you won't be bringing that experience with you.

it's the same reason summer employers will ask you what your spring or fall class schedule is during fall oci - although it's not your experience yet, they want to know what you're going to bring with you.

Disagree strongly.

It's all signaling. They want to see your past jobs to see if you'll be smart enough to handle this one. They want to see your class schedule to see if you're actually a biglaw type or if you're a humanities major hoping to make some quick money.

They're not like, "Oh he's taking Sec Reg! He'll be so helpful with all that valuable knowledge of the hornbook!"

well that's a little different -- you already have a blurb about the firm on your resume from when you worked there your 2L summer, so you just add a line to it. I'm talking about a new entry for a position I haven't actually worked in yet
