I was in the middle of a merger deal, working 80 hours a week, for about two months. For weeks, I’d been telling the partner, I was best man in an upcoming wedding and I couldn’t work Saturday the 5th. He assured me that I’d be fine. “For God’s sake, what kind of monster do you think I am?”
The Thursday before the actual wedding weekend, I reminded him yet again I wouldn’t be able to work Friday or Saturday night. Once again, he assured me that would not be a problem—though I did note the change in his words. It went from “of course” to “not a problem.” The next day, around 4 PM, I emailed him to say I was leaving for the weekend. His electronic response: “What do you mean “leaving?”
My head almost exploded. What do you mean, what do you mean “leaving”? We’ve been talking about this for weeks, asshole! Two minutes later, he was at my door, dropping work-bombs on my desk. Revise the lock-up agreement, tweak the merger docs, revise the S-4. So I just looked at him, like a psychiatrist might look at a sociopath talking calmly about decapitating a young boy, and reminded him that I was best man in a wedding. I wasn’t a guest, nor an usher. I was best-fucking-man!
“So you want to party all weekend, is that it?”
“No, I just want to go to my best friend’s wedding,” I said, choking back my rage.
Asshole partner took this in, nodded, and then began cross-examining me. Where is the wedding? What time is it? What time will it end?
My mind started racing. Is this the moment I quit? Should I just tell him to fuck off? Punch him in the face as hard as I can? Instead, I just stood there nodding like a cowardly bobble-head doll, agreeing to work through the night (and blow off the rehearsal dinner). He did, however, agree to let me attend the wedding. From 5 to 9 on Saturday I was a free man. But he wanted me back at the office by ten. Because there was work to do. I agreed. Even thanked him for his compassion.
So I went to the wedding and had a miserable time. Not even a sip of wine. And like a loyal associate, I was back at the office at 9:45, in my tux, ready to work.

i dont believe the story b/c of the way he "dropped" this work on you.
in a normal deal, you get the "drop" when you get a markup from the other side on Friday. The partner doesn't just say out of the blue, hey we've been dicking around all week but let's just tweak this now.

jesus. what a dik.
the worst part is that all of the things I missed for biglaw only happened because the partner had no interest in just doing the work himself...if I couldn't find another associate to cover, which I usually couldn't, I was f'd, even if it was something that the partner could do (and wasn't even below the partner).
this gets me angry thinking about that

irl, warn 3 mos out, warn 2 mos out, warn 1 mo out, warn 1 week out
and then go, don't warn again.
this is decent flame, though

A friend worked for a particularly aggressive partner. She had a vacation planned and a few days before it began, her Aunt died. So she had to cancel the vacation and fly out for the funeral over the weekend. She informs the partner of this fact.
Halfway through the funeral (think it was on a Staturday), her phone starts blowing up. He called something like 4 or 5 times during the course of the service and sent multiple email messages telling her to contact him immediately.
Immediately after the service ends, she calls the partner. He asks her where the fuck she is at. She says that she's in another state. He asks her why the fuck she is there and that vacation is over (mind you, she left the office on the Friday prior). She tells him that she canceled her vacation and that she is at her aunt's funeral. He tells her that she can't do anything for the aunt now, and he needs her back in the office on Sunday to work on a temp restraining order.
She turned off her phone, came back on Monday and quit. Firm begged her to stay and let her switch offices. I heard a rumor that she got some $ out of it, but she wouldn't say anything. She ended up quitting a few months later.

On my first big merger deal as a first year associate, I had to miss my grandfather's funeral due to a signing.
I've had to skip out on a few weddings, too.
The OP's story is obviously copypasta but it's grounded in fact. I know more than one associate who was allowed to stand up in a friend's wedding but only for the few hours that they would actually have to be on wedding duty. And then it's back to work.
