Apparently the going rate for a permanent associate (or at least James Colliton) at Cravath is $500k. I bet his hours weren't bad either. Something to be proud of.

There was an interesting point about this on Greedy:

"i don't know if that figure is correct, but this dude was a specialist -- not a tax attorney, but a employee benefits attorney. this, however, makes him less, not more, special. basically, he was a permanent associate, not partner track and given his age, maybe he'd been at the firm for a long enough of a time for them to pay him 500K.."

Sounds like an of counsel/non-equity partner, but without even the title to go with it.

Yeah, I guess my point is that everyone looks on permassociatedom as a kiss of death, but it seems like not a bad deal at all if you can build value in a speciality like that.

I'd rather make $500k as an associate than $450k as a partner.

I think in this case it might okay since you have the Cravath name to go with it, but otherwise if you're going to settle for a permanent salaried position, why not go to a firm like Kirkland and get "Partner" on your business card and resume.

Isn't Cravath's partner compensation lockstep? I think that would explain it--most other firms have parntership subcategories that determine compensation so specialists like this can have the title without ever taking as big a cut of the profits as the higher-earning partners.

Some have suggested there is value to being called "partner" because clients respect that and it will help you get business. If I was 10 years out of school (i.e., had two-thirds of my career yet to worry about) and had that choice, I would take the $450k and title with the hope that I would quickly surpass the $500k mark.

I would think the duty she owed to the children. He didn't have a specific duty, but that bitch was the one person in this world the law expects to protect those children. If that duty is going to mean anything in the eyes of the law, the punishment has to be greater for someone who has the duty than someone that doesn't.

...and now some ADA who probably makes ten times less than this fuckball is going to put him away. There is justice in the world.

God, these people spend so much time at work, and make so much money, that they think that they can engage in whatever depravity they want outside the office.

This is not the first biglaw attorney to face this type of charge, and it'll be far from the last. There is so little time outside of the office that people probably begin to feel that nothing that happens "out there" is even real. I imagine, if I was working 80+ hour weeks, that it would begin to feel as if everything that happened outside work was no more real or consequential than a dream, something that could never actually reach inside the hallowed halls of my office to get me. It's a relatively short jump to go from feeling like that to feeling like you can -- and perhaps need -- to do nearly anything you want outside of the office, just so that you can feel again, when the entirely arbitrary value of all your baubles inevitably starts to fail to satisfy.

Yes -- I also noticed in the article that he kept an apartment in Manhattan, where he would stay during the week, going home to the suburbs only on weekends. Is this common practice for NYC Biglaw lawyers -- they don't even have time to spend any time at all with their families during the week!
