1st year - got stealthed from nyc biglaw

i had billed ~500 hours since starting in september. my group (corp) had been ridiculously slow and apparently they let me and a couple other midlevels go.
killself? i know odds are slim that ill find another biglaw gig. i started with 160K debt and have like 148k left. i have no idea wtf to do and im just shocked/in denial. |

As for dudes suggesting patent bar, fuck this I'm done with the law. I have no desire to stay in this profession and grind for anything less than 100K. I'll be perfectly fine being a teacher and making 50K to work 7-3 and have summers off. Just sucks that I would have to be on IBR into my 50s.

I'll never go back to NYC (at least not as a biglaw stooge), but I'm still doing corporate work for real life clients as opposed to divorces and DWIs for joe bag of donuts. |

Firm was White & Case. Was living with parents for a while and eventually got lucky as shit and an offer from another V50 NYC corporate group. Worked in biglaw until last year and lateralled to a chill midlaw regional firm. Making mid 6 figures, not quite 9-5 in house chill gig, but way less stressful than biglaw.
Things turned out really well for me and I feel lucky as shit. Got married a few years ago and have 2 kids. On my super crazy days I tried to think about how close I was to being a poor teacher. |

On track to bring in $1M of billable Q1 2021. Hired 2 ex-biglaw associates to work under me and I basically have my own mini practice group within the firm. Noone bothers me and I'm in complete control of my schedule.
Best part is because my deals are a fraction of the bigger deals that biglaw handles for my clients, they rarely ever want to do late night or weekend calls. Also get the benefit of biglaw expertise/specialists from my old firm since they have vested interest in making sure client gets a good outcome since they are referring me to client.
To the junior biglaw bros (if any left on the bort). It can get better. Really use your early years to figure out what you're good at and bust your ass to hone that skillset. I got super lucky and not going to deny that. But competence and coming off a normal person went a long way. Clients always have smaller work they dont want to pay $1K an hour for and biglaw bros will be more likely to refer you if they know your work and don't view you as competition. |
