it is fair to say that you implied that the ability to count cards was an obstacle to "easy money." An impediment or hindrance to achieving or obtaining something with ease is generally regarded as making it more difficult. An impediment or hindrance defined by latent characteristics, such as the concentration required by card counting, is generally described as "difficult."

No, not really. Variance is so high that you need a big bankroll, plus you never really know whether you're actually a winning counter, because even if you are, you might lose for months or years. So even if you are, you might chicken out after losing for a while. And even worse, of course, is if you actually are messing up, but you're overconfident and attribute your losses to variance.

Poker is much easier, and you're doing it with casino consent (although most casinos won't care about counting unless you're blatant or at really high stakes).

Of course, the advantage of blackjack is comps. You can lead a pretty nice lifestyle counting, even without pulling out huge money.

no, but come on. if you play a pass line bet, and play 3-4-5x odds, that's a decent-sized bet for each play. you go on a run of 4 or 5 bad outcomes and you've lost most or all of your money.

i'm just saying that for someone who wants lots of game play, craps is great so long as you can play with enough cash to get plenty of play given the minimums.

Yeah, craps is fun if you get a good roll going, and as long as each shooter hits at least a couple numbers that you have money on before sevening out, you can stay afloat for a while. But when the shooter sets a point and you make even a standard bet (like passline odds, plus 5,6,8,9 as applicable), and then they immediately seven out on the next roll it is pretty devastating.

this is my point. if you make good money and gamble with like a grand+, craps is great. if you're cheap or poor and sit down with a hundred, craps can be bad (or else your're likely to not lay the odds, which ups the house edge).

Agreed. Assuming a good run, the social environment of a craps table makes it the best game in the casino.

She is certainly a fickle bitch though. I've played enough to have seen runs where someone (including myself) rolls for like an hour, as well as see the dice get passed around the table with each shooter sevening out almost immediately after setting a point.

One time, this dude gets the dice and rolls a seven on the come out roll. Ok great, everyone gets paid on the line. Then he rolls another seven. Awesome, paid again. He went on to roll like 8 or 9 sevens in a row on the come out, and eveyone was loving it. When he finally set a point, everyone starts putting their money out on the usual bets. I had my chips in hand, about to put my money out when I thought to myself "wait a minute, this guy is really good at rolling sevens." So I just left my passline bet out there and nothing else. Sure enough, he sevens out on the first roll after the point. I know, cool story bro.

The best I've ever done was hit 5 out of 6 points for the fire bet. I rolled for probably around 40 minutes, made a few k, and was a popular dude.

Changed my mind - I guess I could edit the blank post to say something arrogant and snarky. lol

The point is that most gambling anecdotes that merely report short term variances or describe someone having mystical foresight into the outcome of randomness are from people who don't understand statistical probabilities, the principle that past performance does not imply future results and, relatedly, optimal betting strategies. To be fair, this is far more common and indicative of intelligence in poker than table games for a variety of reasons, but still.

I see. I thought it was clear from my earlier posts that I understand gambling and probabilities well enough. The anecdotal post, from which you concluded I was dumb, was not meant to convey the message that I believe superstitious or supernatural forces are at work. Quite to the contrary, I simply meant to convey the message that, while of course it all comes down to probabilities and nothing more, any seasoned gambler can still acknowledge more than a few crazy gambling stories. That is all.

you morons realize they use huge decks and constantly shuffle at any decent stakes right? This effectively makes it impossible to be a profitable professional black jack player, even with a TEAM of card counters. What you read in a book 15 years ago or saw in a movie doesn't still apply.

Some casinos use the continuous shuffle machines where they use 6-8 decks but after each hand they put the discarded cards back in the machine.

Some still use the shoe, 6-8 decks and they deal until most of the cards are gone, then reshuffle.

If you are going to count, you can't do it with the continuous shuffle machines, but you can do it with the shoe.

But really, you should just give up on the whole thing, play perfect basic strategy and enjoy yourself.

I was waiting for someone to say this. Between shuffling machines and blackjack paying out 6:5, card counting simply isn't profitable unless you can find a casino off the beaten path. (And even then it's risky. If they catch you counting on the Strip, they ask you to leave. If they catch you counting at some other dive, they may just break your kneecaps.)
