mostly because in big law and get everything covered through seamless. when i do cook, i just make some beans/grains meal. also though, was squickness factor, even though i like tofu fine (though an acquired taste) for me. i've bought it before, but always ended up throwing it out before i could man up and make it.

surprised how well this turned out. bought extra firm, pressed it between paper towels to further dry out, cut into eight slices, pan fried in olive/sesame oil mixture until edges very crispy and charred and then topped with stubbs bbq sauce. super easy. very yum. feel dumb i didn't do this before.

More BBQ tofu tips: Try pressing (like you did) and then baking it with BBQ sauce for a while (like an hour). Turns out nice and crispy. Or if you're feeling adventurous, these are awesome (or just use storebought BBQ sauce and make it simple): http://www.artisanveganlife.com/game-day-fare-bbq-ribs/

just put a couple large chunk tofu in a cooking dish, cover with thin slices onions and BBQ sauce. Slow cook for an hour or so @ 350, covered. this is good with side rice

enh. not a feminist and more libertarian, but probably not all that manly. i got a dog, yo. a rescue. and seeing the emotional range and complexity in that animal- the fact that he could get shit scared, be completely loving, impish, playful, bored and depressed, have irrational insecurities, the whole spectrum... that probably started it.

spending some time at farm sanctuary and learning about factory farming probably sealed the deal. dogs aren't alone in being able to feel shit. it's just absolutely disgusting the way animals in the food industry are treated and raised and slaughtered. i have no doubt they're in discomfort/pain from birth till death, and likely scared shitless half the time. watch, earthlings- you can download it online. it sort of blew my mind.

i'm not vegan-vegan. i can't really get all worked up about eating honey or crap like that. and if i ever moved away from the city, i don't imagine i'd be too bothered about eating eggs from rescued hens or whatever. but yeah, in the meantime, no meats or dairy for me. it helps i believe it's a lifestyle that's healthier and more sustainable. but despite the hype, it is way, way harder to stay built on a vegan diet. there are exceptions. but i think they're either genetic outliers, work and plan to insane degrees, and probably were all bulked up before turning vegan and are only maintaining.

have you thought about free range foods at all? I have a friend who is a hunter and i get meat and fish from him, its all wild, so i know the animal had a good life and he is a very good hunter, one shot guy and its over. But i can't eat store bought stuff knowing how the naimals are raised, it makes me physically ill. It why i stopped eating KFC, and KFC was a childhood fav for me

that said, im 99% vegetarian, only eat meat like 1x a month, so his supply works fine for me

btw, marinate your tofu and it will taste like whatever you want

I've considered switching to free range for this. I don't eat much meat as it is. Very small portions every day. Right now I'm going through a stew I made. One pound of beef is going to last ten meals of this stew. That's 1 1/2 oz per day.

do bison beef, bison roam the plains and are not mistreated, its very good for you and its not that much more $ than regular beef, especially if you don't eat meat that much. My theory is if you are only going to eat a little bit of it, make it the very best you can afford. also, yolo.

Well you made it sound like they are getting picked off with a rifle.

That's free range and they are still obviously fenced in, but they get plenty of room. You can get free range beef and chicken, too. But yeah, being able to go to a real farmer's market and buy straight from the dude that raised it is 180.

Great Plains bro here.

no, i was talking about a guy who hunts, then about a friend with a farm. Farm is 100's of acres of natural pasture with trees and a creek. Bison live happy lives, up until the final moment which is done Temple Grandin style.

Free happy chickens taste exactly like chicken - first time i had a free chicken, it was an epiphany moment, i had never tasted anything so delicious in my life, you didn't need any seasoning. These chickens ran around another friends farm like the family dogs, ate bugs all day, roosted where ever and lived alpha chicken lives. But my god...the flavour!!!

we have an electric water heater in the kitchen that is breville and boils water like it's going out of style

with clothes and hiking equipment and shit, it's always really good quality things selected after a long period of consideration

i find i enjoy things way better when i contemplate the choices for a month or two

when i buy something on a whim, i am let down within days

this philosophy has also made my wife and i quite comfortably well-off at this point

yeah, if you look into it, the labels mean shit. organic, pesticide free, cage-free, free-range, some of that means better quality meat for you. but none of it actually has to result in better quality for the animals. sometimes it does, but no guarantees. and the more big producers get into the good labels, the less they mean. and you're ultimately still killing baby animals. most animals we eat have been alive less than a year. i'd get pretty turned off if some tail waggy lab was raised humanely, with tons of love, positive training, happy life only to be humanely killed for food at age 2 or 3. and farm animals? feel just as much. they're all comparatively dumb. but that doesn't mean they can't be happy, miserable or anything in between.

i don't mind hunting as much, but wouldn't want to hunt personally and find it easy enough to stay away. dairy is a bitch to do without and the thing i miss most. but i dunno. i'm happy enough eating this way. and as an aside, totally great for getting chicks. most vegan chicks want vegan boyfriends if they're doing it for moral reasons. so that works.

i have never eaten veal, would rather stick a knife in my eye than eat veal. I use to hate hunters, but sis married one and now i get it. He is humane and respectful, and eats everything he bags. He hunts deer, elk and moose, and nothing goes to waste. And he fishes in northern lakes in Canada, so the fish is incredible. I have farmer friends who do free range animals, then sell freezer packs in the fall, i guess i am lucky that way. But store bought stuff? No thanks.

I like fishing but i could never kill an animal with a gun...leave that to the he-man bro-in-law, who is also a STEM in case you were wondering, and i know you were

good for you, bro. i'm not trying to be all evangelistic about it. it's a pretty personal choice. everyone's gotta be comfortable with it. it sounds like you've thought about it, and are comfortable with what you eat.

interestingly, i don't broadcast i'm vegan, and i'd say 50% of my friends have never noticed, despite plenty of shared meals and nights at the bar. no one cares what anyone else eats. i don't have to explain myself or risk sounding like a judgmental bastard because i don't order wings and a burger like the rest of the table. it's a nice surprise.

a block of tofu has 45 grams and 400 calories. you can find vegan protein powder, and there's other mock meat, protein in grains and beans, etc. it's possible. it's just more of an effort. like i said, i think it's totally reasonable to maintain what you have. but it's hard for me to imagine building huge muscles while vegan unless every single meal was planned out and optimized.

a shit load of my friends are vegan, vegitarian or totally organic now, so maybe as ppl get older, this kind of lifestyle choice is nbd. I recently went to a vegetarian wedding...its was cool.

heating olive oil to that temp basically turns it into a transfat, dummy. tofu is just processed soy and will eventually bump your estrogen up, causing you to grow moobs. stubbs is nothing but vinegar and sugar. overall your meal wasn't particularly nutritious or healthy. congratulations on your excellent method of eating you fucking homo.

not really. i've lost a little strength and a little gut. so i feel like they about even out. i haven't gotten sick, but didn't really used to.

in fairness though, i'm a crap vegan. for the first 6 months or so i just gave myself permission to eat whatever. so i was the oreo and pilsbury crescent rolls vegan. and that's shit that just can't make you healthy. recently, i've been paying more attention to eliminating processed foods, drinking, and making sure protein's higher- supplementing with vegan protein powder. hopefully it makes a difference. if not, back to my pints of coconut ice cream and spicy sweet doritos. (i exaggerate a little- but not much. def not a healthy diet so far.)

i'm sure. processed food is crap for energy levels. in fairness, you could probably do unprocessed foods, fruits, veggies and meat in a healthful way more easily than being vegan. especially if you want muscle. it takes a lot of thought to get in enough protein without animal sources, despite vegan propaganda to the contrary.

going vegan/veggies after being brought up on meat and potato is not an overnight thing. Start off with recipes that substitute meat for alternatives (soy, tempeh) that taste like meat. Eventually, your taste for meat will wane, with only an occasional binge. I was totally vegan for like 10 years, then i eventually came back to meat, but in a very limited amount (protein 1-2x/month, 9/10 it was fish). There are so many great recipes out there.

Relatedly, if anyone wants to do something against factory farming, the King legislation is pretty awful:

Farm Animal Cruelty Controversy[edit]

In July 2012, King introduced an amendment to the House Farm Bill that would legalize previously banned animal agriculture practices such as tail-docking, putting arsenic in chicken feed, and keeping impregnated pigs in small crates. "My language wipes out everything they’ve done with pork and veal,” King said of his amendment.[29] The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) President Wayne Pacelle said the measure could nullify "any laws to protect animals, and perhaps... laws to protect the environment, workers, or public safety." [30]

In May 2013, King introduced another amendment to the House Farm Bill, the Protect Interstate Commerce Act (PICA). He stated, "PICA blocks states from requiring 'free range' eggs or 'free range' pork."[31] Specifically, this amendment would affect the 2008 California agricultural legislation, Proposition 2, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. This act was meant to prohibit both the production and sales of battery cage eggs and ban veal crates and gestation crates in the state.[32] The King amendment was approved by voice vote, despite forceful arguments raised against it by Reps. Jim Costa, D-Calif., Jeff Denham, R-Calif., John Garamendi, D-Calif., and Kurt Schrader, D-Ore. The Humane Society of the United States stated that, "King’s amendment could allow the overturning of every voter-approved animal welfare ballot measure relating to agriculture, including Proposition 2 in California (banning extreme confinement crates for pigs, veal calves and laying hens), Proposition 6 in California (forbidding the sale of horses for slaughter for human consumption), Proposition 204 in Arizona (banning veal and pig gestation crates) and Amendment 10 in Florida (outlawing pig gestation crates)."
