Is a bar an easier business than a restaurant? The markups on liquor are high, and I rarely see bars close down. OTOH I can think of a million things that would be a pain about it.

i dunno man. i'm from a small town and the turnover on mom and pop stuff is incredibly high. there are a handful of restaurants that have been around for 50+ years and about 10x as many that have failed within 5 years. it's not a good business to be in. you're better off franchising a taco hell or some shithole like this.

Saw the same thing in the Poortown, USA where I grew up. There was a bar on the main street that was originally called something like Dave & Al's that would close down every two years or so and open up again as Dave & Jim's or Dave & Dan's. Dave owned the property and would convince some other guy he could run a bar after the previous guy failed. There were a few places that were around for decades, but a lot more that we're revolvIng doors of failed mom and pops. It's probably grown a lot harder with the proliferation of outdoor malls full of chain casual dining restaurants.

Now the guy's got Paulie as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with a bill, he can go to Paulie. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie. But now the guy's got to come up with Paulie's money every week. No matter what. Business bad? Fuck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? Fuck you, pay me. The place got hit by lightning, huh? Fuck you, pay me. Also, Paulie could do anything. Especially run up bills on the joint's credit. And why not? Nobody's gonna pay for it anyway. And as soon as the deliveries are made in the front door, you move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar case of booze and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn't matter. It's all profit. And then finally, when there's nothing left, when you can't borrow another buck from the bank or buy another case of booze, you bust the joint out. You light a match.

I'm probably the only person here who has actually owned both a bar and restaurant. Owning a restaurant is way more of a pain in the ass as far as daily bullshit and thin margins but bars have far more potential to ruin you because of drunk driving deaths, fights, theft, etc.

If you don't have experience working in a bar or restaurant you will not survive unless you're very lucky.

what if you have a mandatory i.d. checking policy,

as i was typing "and you don't serve anyone who is visibly drunk" , i realized how that is a problem if you own a bar

yeah, the problem is that most of the time you want to serve the visibly drunk because if you didn't a) people would get pissed off and not come back b) if you stop serving drunk people you don't have the cash to operate; the entire game is based on serving drunk people c) it's still a he said she said situation where they claim they were overserved and you say they weren't.
