Snuck in the middle of Masai Ujiri's introduction as the new GM of the Raptors was this tibdit. The Raptors are considering a name change, according to MSE president Tim Leiweke.
The Raptors were founded in 1993 and named based largely on the popularity of that year's blockbuster Jurassic Park. Since then, the name has become something of a joke, which is shocking. I mean, they put the movie back out in 3-D this year and everything.
A rebrand is dangerous, though. The Raptors is a ridiculous name, but you can do worse. The Beavers and Terriers were two of the other options along with the Raptors. That would be infinitely worse. Note: Still better than the Pelicans.
Toronto is going for a total overhaul of the team, from management to the roster to the rebrand. It's an ambitious plan but necessary if the team is going to become legitimate. |
