Justin Q. Taylor Marcus - as I understand the article, this is not about liking people with a particular genetic makeup. After all, we all make decisions of attraction that way. The fetishisation of Asian women is about not being able to separate someone's Asian appearance from their cultural background/personality. Liking other things about them is not a sufficient compensation for making assumptions based on their race. Sadly this article illustrates what I have heard from women in the past - that by necessity this phenomenon compels many Asian women to suspect anyone who shows interest. Interesting article.

Marcus Stuhr Certainly -- I agree, but sometimes women still feel weirded out even if it's just a physical preference. It's even worse because my exes have been Asian, and I know Chinese and Japanese, which are all red flags that Lena alluded to in her piece. Even though these things may have nothing at all to do with fetishism, others may still disagree. I see it as being no different from a girl who prefers tall men or blue eyes or blonde hair. I'd be interested to hear other perspectives on this.

Lena Chen ‎@Marcus They could be red flags, but obviously, not every dude who speaks a foreign language is a fetishist. My boyfriend, for example, speaks Mandarin and is writing a dissertation on food production in China, but I'm far more likely to make a generalized statement about his German heritage than he is to make one about mine. As that illustrates, even people of color are susceptible to stereotyping others. I also know Asian dudes who are Asian fetishists, i.e. a Chinese guy obsessed with Korea, etc. Do some people dislike even physical preferences? Sure, but I don't think that's so different from really attractive folks not wanting to be pursued for their looks but for something more innate.

Marcus Stuhr I agree on all counts, but your last point is what I seem to feel is more prevalent (from my experience). Perhaps this is my own ignorance/naivety speaking here, but most Asian fetishists I know of don't go after Asian women because they have a preconceived cultural notion of submissive, wok-toting, kimono-wearing geisha girls. From what I can tell, they do it because the physical preference is so strong that they don't really care about the underlying personality traits (thus objectifying). As someone of German heritage myself, I've received a few odd comments (even though I have no personal linkage to the culture), but such comments do not happen often. Do you think the cultural impetus is far more profound than the physical one, in your experience?
