Thought I was off the hook because documents weren't turned around by the time I left last night.
I went out with friends and got really drunk.
Got an email this morning saying documents got turned around after all. Now I'm in the office, hung over, and shitting my brains out every 30 minutes (got Mickey D's breakfast on the way in - a little treat to myself!)

I read threads like this and I wonder if I got very lucky because I've been in BIGLAW for nearly 6 years, and have never once been called into the office on a weekend out of the blue. Never.
Definitely had a few weekends where some shit has hit the fan and I've had to put in 10-12 hours of work from home over the course of the weekend on a project that was not on the radar Friday afternoon, but that's very rare. Maybe 2 times per year. And people are always very apologetic about it.
Also never had a vacation or holiday weekend away ruined in this way.

Not called into the office on a weekend, but having something pop up on Friday afternoon that ruins your weekend or long weekend is common. You are right that if you don't know about it on Friday it isn't likely to happen.
I definitely had a couple long weekend trips to Tahoe that involved me sitting in a coffee shop with wifi working while my wife and our friends were skiing or having fun. Also, had fun two years ago working Memorial Day weekend after hearing about the deal on Friday afternoon.
But, like you, I literally never stepped foot in the office on a weekend day for more than 15 minutes to pick something up. I work from home a lot, but that isn't that much more pleasant.
It is just nice to know that I can to Napa for the weekend with no need to even bring my computer.

I honestly think this is as much about setting expectations as the natural bent of the people you are dealing with. When I get ready to go on a vacation, I tell people that I'm basically going to be out of pocket. I tell them that weeks in advance. I tell them repeatedly. I don't apologize for it. I don't let guilty get the best of me and say something like "I guess if it's important I can do a few hours of work."
Some partners are just assholes, don't give a fuck, and will expect you to drop everything to service them. But most are't. And as long as you're clear about not being available, you have the cover to simply not be availble, even if you probably could be if you were willing to ruin your vacation.
Looking back, do you feel like you worked with shitty people? Do you feel like you could have done more to stand up for yourself?
