ND is overenrolled for next year. Like, big time. And the class is heavily skewed toward men. So they're offering those male students who have deposited a full tuition fellowship to defer for one year. If I had that option, I'd pump gas for a year.

What difference does that make if I start raking it in at 145k at 24 or 25? It's not like most biglaw lawyers have an unlimited shelf-life anyway - meaning you're probably not going to last more than 5-7 years no matter when you start.

Why not live more comfortably by not having to pay 12k/year in debt? That's 12k/year that you can put towards the down payment of a nice house.

You're going to make 6 figures for the rest of your life if you want to stay in law, whether or not you're at biglaw. You're entirely ignoring the fact that you're making no money in the gas pumping year.

The free tuition isn't merit-based. It's based on a royal fuck-up by the administration. There's no leverage whatsoever to be gained.

And the suggestion above that you could do 1L somewhere else and then take the money won't work . . . they're asking people to defer matriculation entirely. To do what the poster above suggested, they'd have to withdraw and reapply to transfer. And given the size of the class they accidentally admitted, I wager they won't be taking transfers next fall.

0L?

The story is they're overenrolled, like they've done on occasion before. Rumors are it's skewed male, it's 100+ over, and they're offering money to people willing to defer. I know a handful of men who've deferred because of money, and one woman who deferred because of suggestion admissions pressure but without financial incentive. futureclerk has someone inside ND and like to bash ND, so he's the source of this info right now.

ND's always been skewed more toward guys. My class is easily 60-40. I just think that of the devout Catholics who want to practice law, it's going to be heavily male. Of the people seeking ND football, it's going to be heavily male. But maybe that's just rampant speculation.

EDIT: See, e.g., http://law.nd.edu/prospective_students/admissions/profile.html (noting that Notre Dame's entering class in 2005 had 40% women).

I'm sure some of us can find out in the fall through admissions, but right now it's impossible to say.

USC is doing this too. WTF was up with admissions this year?

USC isn't restricting it to dudes though. Anybody can get the free tuition (only 1 year free though).

Because that would further strain the poor physical building's resources, result in TTT jobs, and create a need for a 10-year rebuilding plan to escape the inevitable USNWR 40th ranking?

umm, 3.94/168 with strong soft factors. Huge fellowship at ND. I could have gone to what you probably think is national.

I actually appreciate their mission, among other things.

Given how much extra tuition they'll be making this year regardless, I'd wager yes. Honestly, were I an incoming 1L who had decided on ND, I'd take the offer just to get myself out of that miserably huge class. Being a 1L there next year is going to be a nightmare.
