Among top handful of 1Ls at a non-HYS T-14. What next?
Grew up in NYC and leaning corporate. What's the credited firm?
Avoid NYC and cop quality of life in Chicago or DC (ties from undergrad + work experience) ? Or is that overstated?
Convince myself to do clerkships/ litigation instead?
In before 'drop out', 'don't do law', etc. comments

if I were you . . . I'd do something like:
2L at a prestigious firm (market doesn't really matter)
Clerk somewhere prestigious . . .
Shoot for DoJ Honors (do SEC or something like that if you want corp) and if you don't get that, then go to your firm.

hey first response is credited.
keep those grades up 2l year for clerkships though bruh
also do law review and be sure to cop an SA at a prestigious firm next fall
edit: actually, if you want, gun your ass off, do ed board of LR, make good grades all 3 years, and shoot for a scotus clerkship. then teach

?
Don't think it's much easier in any other practice group, like corporate
some other practice groups are less leveraged like regulatory, but work is slow (and boring) in those practice areas, so partnership isn't much easier

i can tell you from experience that whatever shit you did during your clerkship will matter ZERO 5 years into practice.
when john desmarais handpicked the partners and associates to go over with him to his new firm, do you think he went through the undergrad majors and clerkship experience of the people he brought over? no. he picked the people whose work he was impressed with and who he liked.
this is why a bunch of tooly, nerdy law students who overthink their entire careers about the "right" major and the "right" clerkship and the "right" firm wonder 5-10 years why they are less successful than those who actually have some personality and are well-liked by their colleagues get the opportunities they've been gunning for.

I really wasn't talking about the appearance of the credential -- I think the experience of, for example, writing claim construction opinions would help someone to actually be a better patent litigator and thus make them more valuable down the road quite apart from their credentials. And, of course, the credential doesn't hurt during those first 5 or so years of your career -- which, I'm sure you won't deny, can in many cases be very important years for setting the trajectory of one's career. In any case, I don't think anything about my post suggests the things you point to aren't important or are less important than credentials. I literally just said it "probably wouldn't hurt" for someone going into patent-litigation to clerk in a patent-litigation heavy district if they had the opportunity.
Not sure what it was about my post that struck a nerve and set you off on a screed about "tooly, nerdy law students who overthink their entire careers," but clearly something did the trick.

but it does impact career potential
working in a patent-heavy district or the Fed Cir means working on hundreds of patent cases every year
after that year, they're going to know a lot about patent law, court procedures, and will probably be better writers (tho this depends on the judge)
this is coming from someone who is a biglaw patent litigator who doesn't have these clerking credentials, but has worked with those who do. if ur litigating in ed tx or d del, don't you think it'd be helpful to have an associate who clerked in those districts?
also, it helps you get staffed on good cases; clients will like seeing associates with those credentials
also at certain ip boutiques, it is a major credential as mentioned above
