Yale and Columbia don't belong on that list. Columbia is a festering ground for hack Post "writers", who are rapidly being replaced by BLAWGS designed at MIT/Caltech/Stanford. Yale is just a gay man's fart colony. Seriously in decline since the Sixties.

I'll accept an argument for Stanford being on the list.

princeton has awesome Phd programs in STEM. engineering is top 10 as well.

i only put uchicago because of their strength in Phd programs in social sciences and business. math and physics are good too but not as strong as harvard/mit/stanford/princeton/berkeley. perhaps berkeley should have been #5.

With the exception of Harvard and maybe Stanford, I think American universities will crash before Oxbridge. The decline is unmistakable, but mostly due to lack of funding (which could always be fixed). American universities suffer from a much deeper problem of curricular gutting. Whereas an Oxbridge degree still pretty much means you're good at whatever you studied, that's not true of American arts and humanities, which have been utter shit since the Sixties. Despite insane radicalism in most of the country, you still don't see Black/Chicano/Womyn's Studies proliferating nearly as quickly there. French deconstruction shit is still looked on with some suspicion, because you get called on shit during tutorials.

Absent a deranged Tory government smashing up Oxbridge with gay egalitarian policies (as a final demented Bullingdon stunt before that party goes the way of the stegosaurus), Oxbridge will limp on for two or three more centuries, by which time Yale will be ashes.

LOL, who cares where Emma Watson and her pals want to study this year? Those are fashion trends and say nothing practical about the future.

The prestige of our universities is *completely* tied to our country's material prosperity. If Yale's endowment declines, they're fucked. If you've been at all sentient these past few years, you'd realize that fortunes can turn on a dime. Oxbridge has resources to cope with declines in finances. They've been coping for a long time already. We don't.

A burst in the student loan bubble will either lead to a much-needed overhaul of our corrupt and sprawling educational bureaucracy (painful for every school, except Harvard and the technicals), or a greater stress on college as an elite brand, rather than a vehicle of social mobility. That might work in the short-term, but someone's going to point out the emperor's tiny pink dick eventually.

oxbridge ug is not that selective, and their phd programs are second-tier compared to top U.S. programs.

Oxbridge consistently turns out more impressive alumni than every American university except Harvard (and maybe Stanford).

American Ph.D. programs are only "selective" because they run like dating on Plenty of Fish: solicit apps from a bunch of bottom-feeders and then admit the most servile credential-chasers. Every college graduate with a pulse throws an application to the top schools, because they have such vague criteria for admission. On the other hand, Oxbridge pretty much tells you up front you can't get in without certain scores. They've become less selective about their international applicants because of financial pressure, but they still run them through the wringer once they get in (unlike Yale, where you're "officially off the treadmill."). So Oxbridge is in decline, but its bubble will not burst as catastrophically as Berkeley's and Yale's will.

You don't know what you're talking about. Because of the structure of their postgraduate education system, Oxbridge places abysmally in American academia. As a result, the best grads tend not to go there. The caliber of PhD students in top American programs is almost universally higher than their Oxbridge equivalent.

LOL, this is patently untrue in the humanities, where Oxbridge alum CRUSH the competition. Even a third-class Oxford dumb like Christopher Hitchens regularly *RAPED* American Ph.D.'s in direct encounter. Niall Ferguson currently has more influence in the White House than Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman. Why? Because Ferguson's RIGHT.

In the sciences, only Harvard/Stanford/MIT/Chicago boast stronger alum.

Americans chase credentials, but you see who's really better in the results.

France or Germany don't have a top university? The Sorbonne has a famous name- is it not good?

Just asking- don't know anything about them myself.

They have top universities, but not top 5 in the world.

Sorbonne used to refer to the University of Paris, which *was* a fantastic university, but France gutted it during the Revolution. It was revived briefly in the 19th century as a shadow of its former self, only to be gutted again by the thoughtless Sixty-Eighters.
