corporate primarily do m&a. however, they also do "general commercial" work, which is tied to certain products. this can include agreements with vendors, licensing for the products, etc.
lawyers here seem to stay for a while. those that have gone have left for other large tech companies (some have left and come back).
people do come from all over the country, as well as internationally. i relocated to the bay to work for the company.

i actually didn't think he was that bad, but he's def not the type of dude i would want to hang out with outside of work, though I only met him in person a handful of times. I worked on a few deals with him when I was a first and second year, and he was a year ahead of me. I remember he was kinda douchey on internal conference calls, i.e. when the partner would ask him to do something, he would say things like, "got it, big guy". And he would volunteer to do work when it really wasn't necessary, for example, i remember a deal we were on, he volunteered to draft and put together all of the sig pages for the deal docs like weeks ahead of closing. It was pretty clear that entities would be changing, and it was way too early to do sig pages b/c they would have to be redone anyway. i think he just wanted to gun and show the partners that he was down to do the stupid busy work. I just felt like he was the type of person that tried really hard to be cool and to ingratiate himself with the higher ups, though it would come off as forced and inauthentic.

How much does the law firm itself matter among prospective hires; i.e., V10 v. V50 etc.? Are there specific firms that are more desirable?
Also, what's the shortest time from law school your department would consider hiring someone?

Thanks, brother. Two last questions:
Going along with the above--any opinion on Fenwick & West?
Also, how many people usually apply for any one position that opens up? Are there any sneaky ways to back-door a position?

I know that fenwick doesn't have a very prestigious vault ranking, but they are highly thought of in SV. Since they serve many clients here, it is pretty easy for them to transition in-house to tech companies. I know a number of ex-fenwick people at other tech companies here.
No idea how many people apply for any one position. I got the job after an internal recruiter called me (i wasn't actively looking to leave the firm at the time). I know that we put a premium on candidate referrals, so any contacts you have at a given company (legal or not) would probably be the best way to get your foot in the door. Also, the in-house community in SV isn't really that big. Many people transition between companies, and for whatever reason, internal recruiters like people with previous in-house experience. So, even if the job with your dream company isn't available at the moment, it could be advantageous to take a job with smaller similar companies in the same region, i.e. I know people at our company that have come from places like Adobe, Intuit, etc.

Hours are generally stable. I'm in the office by 8:30 and leave by 4ish to try to beat traffic back to the city. Will get most of my work done before then...but I'll usually answer a few emails during the evening. Our office is usually cleared out by 5:30-6. I usually work out during lunch.
One telling example of how my post-firm life is different, is that about 6 months after I started working here, I had some late meetings and didn't get home til like 8pm, and my wife was like, 'wtf, you're home so late'; whereas at the firm, 8pm was an early day.
[edit to address your other question]
Haven't met that many finance/cap markets people here. our company is sitting on a ridiculous amount of cash and does virtually no financing transactions. however, i do know one guy that came from a firm and he did primarily real estate finance prior to coming here. he works with our corp real estate group here.
