Genius

Welcome to my first blog entry. If you're reading this, you are either new to my blog in its early stages or you just browsed through months of entries in search of this one. Knowing the time that you have already committed to find this entry, I write this entry with the full intent of making it worth your while.

I found the sudden "genius" inspiration today of blogging my 1L confessions in an effort to be noticed by the Yale Law Admissions Office. Whether they (you) are reading this because this blog has become a sudden internet sensation or whether they (you) are reading this because the URL is listed on my transfer application, I hope that this blog finds a place in your life today as a candid, honest look at law school by an over-achiever with a habitually belated sense of purpose. Trust me, if my sense of purpose weren't always 3 months behind schedule, I wouldn't be blogging to be noticed for a transfer seat.

1L Orientation is still 3 weeks away. I need to hunt down my immunizations record in accordance to Wake's student health policy, and I need to find a doctor to sign off on my bill of health. Both these tasks are going to be a nightmare since my immunization records are a mess due to the occasional odd vaccine during undergrad for international travels and my lack of a family doctor. Also, my parking permit needs to be purchased in 3 days--$500 to park in the law school parking lot, where only 100 spots are reserved for 160 incoming students. While the law school boasts that the environment is not cutthroat by any standard, I find myself already stressed enough to beat up every incoming student I know on Facebook for the next parking spot. Next year, if faced with a limited parking situation again, I'm going to get a motorcycle for New Haven and save myself the trouble.

Delineation

After I resigned from my consulting job earlier this year, I took an internship with a litigation firm in Charlotte, NC. One of the attorneys there made an especial effort to share his list of do's and don'ts of law school. The most important piece of personal advice that I took away was his instruction to be fully aware of myself as a person, to create a long-lasting solid reputation for myself, and to delineate myself with a reputation unique from other students. Originally, I interpreted this advice as the necessity to create a persona to attain the "ideal" reputation. However, a rising 2L reader made a comment to me yesterday which helped me understand that successful delineation does not necessitate the acting of an alternate social role or the attainment of an ideal reputation. In recounting her 1L experience, she stated that by actively seeking to keep true to herself, she managed to set herself apart from the crowd as one of the only engaged couples to survive the stressful 1L year.

With 20 days until orientation, the revelation comes with a big sigh of relief. I have been running out of time to create a solid persona which I could maintain for the rest of my legal care. Taking my friend's advice that my natural personality--quirks included--is sufficient to garner a respectable reputation, I plan to make every effort to maintain my strong sense of independent individualism among a fresh mob of strong-minded overachievers.

All talk aside, though, first impressions are the key to success in a new setting that requires heavy networking, and hairstyle is an essential first impression factor. I have spent 3 weeks mulling over the choice of an updated hairstyle. Do I want my first impression to be soft and feminine with long, treated locks or to be determined and bold with a short pixie bob? I'm definitely leaning toward the shorter haircut. In addition to the more aggressive first impression conveyed, it requires much less time and effort to maintain--giving me more time to devour the latest research in behavioral economics and law. Did I mention one of my many quirks include a nerdy tendency to read research papers for fun?

West End

Today begins my last free weekend before driving back home to Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem is a beautiful small town with quaint historic neighborhoods that specialize in independent coffee shops and art galleries. While I imagine my long-term tenure there as an idyllic and serene one, I cannot think of the town as anything more than a dark blot on my summer as it represents stress and uncertainty to me right now.

Of course, I am excited to be headed back home to my new apartment. I'm living in a historic Queen Anne home in the historic West End district. The home has been split into 2 apartments and one studio. My apartment is beautiful and full of old-style charm, such as glass windows, antique hardwood floors, and a whole-house attic fan (which unfortunately, no longer functions). Luckily I have a great landlord too. The historic West End district is one of the best neighborhoods in Winston-Salem, with its own "business district" that is comprised of, you guessed it, art galleries, coffee shops, gelato cafes and wine bars. I'm 2 blocks away from two of the best parks in town, so my little mutt Mona will love our new life too, hopefully.

I chuckle when people express to me their disapproval at my living so far away from the law school, a mere 3 miles drive away down a pristine tree-lined thoroughfare named after J.R. Reynolds, who more or less founded the town. I actually would not consider living anywhere else in Winston-Salem though. Not only does the West End provide the perfect distance from school so I can "leave it all behind", but also the West End is one of the only neighborhoods in town that provides the convenience of shops and bars within walking distance, preserving a semblance of "city life" for me. Most students choose to live at one of the Crowne apartment properties, all located within .5 miles of the law school. While the complexes are nice with fairly decent amenities (not by any means luxury, though, as the advertisements claim), the feel of the apartments was simply too collegiate for my tastes. With a majority of the law school living there, I feel that my home would lose the feeling of my own private sphere.

I've made a final IKEA trip to pick up a few knick-knacks, such as a special scarf hanger to display my huge collection from my travels. My sunflower plants are ready to re-pot for my new patio. I bought a few special pots for a new herb garden (which I hope to keep alive this year), and I found pretty cacti with the thinking that they're sturdier than orchids, so I might be less likely to kill them. Next weekend, I need to purchase a new MacBook Pro during North Carolina's tax-free holiday. I also have to get a car inspection before I can renew my tags. With only a small list of "to-do"s left before orientation, the reality of what's happening is starting to sink in. Next Monday, I'm meeting with Professor Taha, and I think after that meeting, I'll finally start feeling like this is all real. After several years of indecision and a lifetime of preparation, I'm finally starting law school!

Unplugged

Thank God for smartphones!

Yes, this entry is brought to you courtesy of a Samsung Galaxy S Android phone on the Verizon 3G network, not because I find blogging on my phone more conevenient than the traditional laptop, but because AT&T has been an inconvenience since July 26th, and I am still without internet at home. Being unplugged has been nice and has given me a chance to read some Grisham and other novels without distractions, but I'm nearing the extent of my tolerance. And I can only excuse poor customer service for so long; in fact, this is the longest I have ever tolerated bad service, which just shows you how loathe I am to switch to Time Warner Cable. But if AT&T doesn't get their act together by Monday evening, I have no choice. School is starting soon, and I cannot be stuck in the previous century in terms of technological accessibility still. In addition, I still have almost 100 hours of Chinese TV drama on Tudou.com to finish before school starts.

At least I was able to purchase my MacBook Pro this weekend during the tax-free holiday through my phone's web browser. And it was a great deal. For $1150, I got an upgraded 500 GB hard drive with free Microsoft Office, $100 in free apps from the App Store, a free all-in-one wireless Epson printer, and 1% cash back through my Discover card. Too bad Apple wasn't giving away a free iPod this year too. Hopefully my next entry will be courtesy of my new MacBook Pro and not this phone again. Even with the swype feature, blogging simply takes much too long.

**Please excuse any and all typos and stylistic errors until I regain computer access to proof more thoroughly

Caffe Prada

Hello from Caffe Prada! I found a wonderful coffee shop/gelateria a 5 minute walk from home. It is owned by an Italian/Argentinan and has a very modern Euro-chic vibe. Best of all, there is free Wi-Fi, as I am still without internet at home. This corner cafe is definitely my type of place. Wine tasting is free every Friday, and the coffee is decent. I have yet to try the gelato, but I am sure it is delicious. It is gelato, after all. But most of all, I'm blogging about Caffe Prada to rave about the great service here. I walked in today with the intent of ordering a simple iced coffee and completing some online forms for financial aid at school. But upon ordering, I realized with horror that I had left my wallet at home in another bag that I used earlier at the farmer's market. Alex (that's the owner's name, or "Gelato Master" as his card states) simply told me to pay next time and it would not be necessary for me to make an extra trip home just to grab payment. With such personable service, I will definitely be back soon!

If you are ever in the area, swing by the intersection of Fourth and Broad. Order a coffee or gelato, and of course, call me! I'm enjoying the independence of having no friends in town. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see my old friends. :)

And speaking of farmer's markets (see where I mentioned it briefly above), there are 3 farmer's markets in this town. Although each is small with only a handful of vendors, it's nice to be able to purchase farm fresh fruits and vegetables several days of the week very inexpensively. I was craving white peaches (only natural for a South Carolinian), and I found some beautiful ones at the farmer's market today for only $1.25/lb! That find alone made the 2 mile trek uphill to the market worth it.

Bandwagon (Almost titled Orgy)

With one week left until Orientation, almost all of the incoming 1Ls have arrived in town. I know this because the Facebook group has made that fact very well known. Every incoming student (save me) has felt compelled at some point over the last two weeks to announce his arrival, his new address, his dog's name, and his favorite newly discovered hangouts in town, including a rant about the cockroach that crawled out of the stir-fry. If one person decides to walk his dog at the local park, he invites 20 others to go with him. The same goes for a dinner in town or a happy hour drink. Although I follow the comments on Facebook because the constant bombardment is hard to ignore, I am thoroughly annoyed by my soon-to-be classmates over-excitement and eagerness to become best friends with everyone. I have this mental image of 100+ law students hanging out a Oregon-trail style covered wagon shaking tambourines, singing, and clawing over each other in an effort to love on one another. And no, I really have no interest in joining the orgy.

My indifference had me concerned earlier this week. Hosting parties and networking had always been my forte and root of my happiness. Was this indifference due to a lack of motivation for studying law, or was it a latent personality trait? However, after meeting with a reputable professor on campus and an associate dean (names kept private as I'm learning to exercise a higher level of discretion) to discuss my identified career path and interests, I realized my indifference laid in neither lack of motivation nor latent personality. I haven't lost my ability to be personable--in fact, I'm already on first name terms with several of the people on campus after just a quick walk through on Tuesday.

But I have lost all interest in artificial friendships and relationships. These are relationships that will only hurt me by distracting me from the goals I have set for myself--amongst them, a competitive transfer to Yale Law on May 15, 2012. (You didn't forget that, did you?) And since I do everything to an extreme, I am EXTREMELY focused on achieving these goals, to the point where all extracurriculars are frivolous and trivial. Although, to be fair, some of the trauma I experienced over the last year probably have affected my attitude toward interpersonal relationships too. After recovering from a bout of severe depression, priorities tend to get shuffled around quite a lot. But a person never hurt herself by choosing few friends and focusing instead on reading too much, right? It's the one area where I find solace right now, especially after discovering the wealth of research written on white collar crimes, behavioral economics and the law, and game theory effects on policy.

Some people may feel compelled to explain to me that law is a very social career, and I will often have to depend on the relationships that I have built around me. I understand. However, I do not feel that friendships struck over 6 hours of wasting $200 on shots at the neighborhood pub are the kind of productive relationships that I am willing to cultivate. I am eager to start the semester, but I'm channeling that energy in a way so that I do not look back on this time as wasted. I am surrounding myself with the proper mentors for a successful career and preparing myself mentally for the long road ahead. I truly believe the right friendships will come naturally, as long as I do not lose focus on why I am here at Wake Law. I am very eager to be assigned to my faculty mentor and start meeting other students with interests in legal academia as part of a program for which I received a special participation dispensation. In these ways, I am just as overly excited as the next 1L. However, there will be no bandwagon orgy for me.

Congressional Pigs

As eager as I was for the debt bill to be passed, I was not expecting changes to my student loan interest to be tucked into the fine print. With the passing of this new bill, Congress is forcing graduate students to pay the interest on their student loans while attending school.

"By forcing graduate students to pay interest while attending school, the federal government should save about $18 billion over the next 10 years....The changes in graduate-school loans, including those for law school and medical school, would take effect July 1, 2012, so loans taken out before then will remain interest-free during the student’s enrollment"

Read more here

Well darn.

The smart pigs in Congress certainly did not think this one through. How is a graduate student without a job supposed to pay interest on loans except with more loans? The maximum amount of loans allowed by law is limited to tuition and cost of living, not taking into account its annual interest payment. A very obvious product of this bill will be the drop in number of students pursuing graduate study, or at least limiting the option to those privileged to have the means of paying for school with cash. For most people with cash, though, the favored method is applying the cash toward the principal of the loan and not the interest, a financially wiser move.

In my case, I will be paying approximately $3,000 in interest next year and $6,000 in interest my third year. As a full-time student limited by the ABA restrictions on work hours, I certainly do not have that kind of money (in the ballpark of $10,000) sitting around, and neither do most other law and medical students. The current method provides incentives to pursue graduate degrees with subsidies. This new bill has rescinded all financial incentives. Thanks to the Republicans, the average American will find it increasingly more difficult to pursue an advanced or professional degree, limiting our skilled work force in the long run, for which there are many economic implications--one that immediately comes to mind being knowledge out-sourcing.

Congress has just legislated the death of higher education.

And I'm not even going to comment on all the places where $18 billion should be cut as opposed to my student loan interest subsidy. (There are a lot!)

I'm furious.

About Me

Tammy is a 1L juris doctor candidate at Wake Forest School of Law and unabashedly aspiring to complete her law degree at Yale Law School, a lifelong dream. She has no idea if any admission officers will read this blog, but if she were in their shoes, she would find it duly sufficient for 3pm office entertainment.

Her all-time hero is Gordon Gekko until the last 5 minutes of both Wall Streets (film). She firmly believes that Bernie Madoff is one of the world's most genius men, although perhaps Harry Markopolos should rank one higher than Madoff for proving mathematically Madoff's Ponzi scheme in a mere 4 hours. Despite her fascination with white collar crimes, Tammy simply isn't smart enough to unravel all the Ponzi schemes in the world, so she plans to travel the world as an economist-lawyer and sip martinis with white collar criminal masterminds instead.

Tammy speaks Mandarin Chinese as fluently as English. However, she can only recall long strings of numbers in Chinese. If you listen to her phone conversations, you will hear a fluid transition between languages mid-sentence that shocks even trained linguists. On the other hand, Tammy will confuse Arabic and French words on occasion, if speaking too fast.

All these trivial facts have no purpose except to entertain you. Thank you for reading!

Tammy is a 1L juris doctor candidate at Wake Forest School of Law and unabashedly aspiring to complete her law degree at Yale Law School, a lifelong dream. This blog is a tongue-in-cheek effort to make that fact known to the Yale Law Admissions Office (and to entertain herself during CivPro). Her constantly belated sense of purpose and unreliable strokes of creativity have landed her in the unusual situation of putting a modern twist on the transfer application by blogging her way through her 1L experience.

FUCK! AWESOME!

Confessions of an Aspiring Yale Transfer Student

By David Lat

Tammy Hsu, aspiring Yalie.

We begin with a message to our readers. Consider yourselves on notice: we regard almost anything you place on the internet, even if just for a brief hot second, to be fair game for coverage. It doesn’t matter to us if you later try to “recall” your mass email or delete your public blog. Once you’ve put something out there, thereby forfeiting any reasonable expectation of privacy, then it’s gone, baby, gone. [FN1]

And honestly, in the internet age, what privacy expectations are reasonable in the first place? Emails can be forwarded; images can be downloaded or photographed themselves, then re-posted. If it’s not already dead, privacy is rapidly dying. You might as well start living in public now, and make life easier for yourself. Just let it all hang out, and then you’ll never be embarrassed about anything getting leaked. (This is my philosophy on Twitter, where my feed is often TMI.)

Living in public: that’s the premise behind a charming new law student blog by a 1L with ambition. Like a fair number of bloggers — Brian Stelter and his Twitter diet come to mind — law student Tammy Hsu seeks to harness public exposure for her own benefit. Hsu, a first-year student at Wake Forest University School of Law, writes a blog built around her goal of transferring into Yale Law School. It’s right there in the title of her site: “Confessions of an (Aspiring) Yalie.”

By putting her ambition out in the open, Hsu is motivating herself to succeed, because failure would be so public. She is lighting the proverbial fire under her own arse, turning her classmates and the internet into one big Tiger Mother. If she’s not at 127 Wall Street this time next year, people will look down upon her — so now she has every incentive to excel in her 1L year at Wake Forest.

Sounds like a great idea, right?

Here’s what Tammy Hsu writes in the “About Me” section of her site:

Tammy is a 1L juris doctor candidate at Wake Forest School of Law and unabashedly aspiring to complete her law degree at Yale Law School, a lifelong dream. This blog is a tongue-in-cheek effort to make that fact known to the Yale Law Admissions Office (and to entertain herself during CivPro).

And here’s what she writes in her introductory post:

I found the sudden “genius” inspiration today of blogging my 1L confessions in an effort to be noticed by the Yale Law Admissions Office. Whether they (you) are reading this because this blog has become a sudden internet sensation or whether they (you) are reading this because the URL is listed on my transfer application, I hope that this blog finds a place in your life today as a candid, honest look at law school by an over-achiever with a habitually belated sense of purpose. Trust me, if my sense of purpose weren’t always 3 months behind schedule, I wouldn’t be blogging to be noticed for a transfer seat.

Alas, it seems that Tammy Hsu has reconsidered her own “genius.” She has now restricted her blog to invited readers only. But you can still access parts of it via Google Cache, at least for now.

What happened? We’re guessing some people didn’t like Hsu’s idea as much as we did. We understand she has been the subject of critical commentary in threads on Top Law Schools and AutoAdmit. Perhaps she decided to restrict blog access after these online discussions of her work.

Some of the readers who emailed Above the Law about Tammy’s blog also weren’t fans:

“Someone needs to provide her a dose of xfer reality.”

“[A] friend is attending Wake Law and ran across this. Apparently she references many things that are being discussed in the closed Facebook group for their Class of 2014. She’s also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/#!/tammytweetsnow [Ed. note: It seems that the Twitter account has been deleted. #tammynolongertweets.]

“Everything about it appears very legit and very… obnoxious.”

“She is not discreet about her intentions. It IS hilarious.”

One reader encouraged us to write about the blog, noting that “if it makes Above the Law it’ll be more likely to get noticed by the Yale Law Admissions Office, which is what she wants.”

We’re happy to help in this regard. Tammy, if you get a request to access your blog from Asha Rangappa — dean of admissions at YLS, and the winner of our law school dean hotties contest — you should obviously accept.

(Hopefully Dean Rangappa has a Google Alert for her name. Hopefully the alert will take her to this post on ATL, which will hopefully take her to Tammy Hsu and Hsu’s blog.)

To be sure, there are some downsides to a blog like Confessions of an (Aspiring) Yalie. Some people harbor anti-transfer-student views — both at the schools that transfer students leave, and the schools they transfer into. By transforming herself into the poster girl for “transferism,” Hsu could be setting herself up for harsh treatment.

In order to get into Yale Law, Hsu will have to excel at Wake Forest. Yale gets about 200 transfer applications a year, and it accepts only 10 to 15 transfers. The transfers I knew at Yale had blown the roofs off the schools where they spent their 1L years (and some of them had been at top 10 schools).

But by indicating that she wants to transfer out, she’s making it less likely that people at Wake Forest will want to help her succeed. Professors and upperclassmen might be less enthusiastic about helping Hsu advance; they might not invest themselves in her career as much as they otherwise would. Why? Because she’s made it clear that she wants out — which is something of a slap in the face to Wake, as well as an indication that she, like Lebron James, wants to take her talents elsewhere.

This “brain drain” problem associated with transfer students is why schools often don’t like it when their students transfer out. Schools don’t like it when their superstars — the students with the highest grades, the law review spots, and the best shots at top firm jobs and clerkships — leave after a year. Some schools even try to make things tough on transfers, through tactics like withholding on-campus interviewing privileges from students with pending transfer apps.

Yale Law School: Xanadu for Tammy Hsu.

The other possible problematic aspect of Hsu’s blog is that it is, well, very un-Yale. Declaring your raw naked ambition so openly is much more… Harvard Law. Perhaps Hsu should focus on transferring to HLS, where she’d probably fit in better. Think “Legally Brunette: The Asian Invasion.”

The need to conceal ambition was, to be honest, one of the things that annoyed me most about YLS. Why don’t we just all admit that we’re gunners and would (literally) stab each other in the back for a D.C. Circuit clerkship interview? Pretending to be all warm and fuzzy with each other while secretly plotting how to snag the #1 recommendation from Bruce Ackerman struck me as disingenuous, not to mention a huge waste of time and energy. (On the other hand, it probably wasn’t bad training for lawyer office politics.)

Readers, what do you think of Tammy Hsu’s blog?

[FN1] What do we regard as not fair game for coverage? Well, we would not use illegal methods — e.g., wiretapping or phone hacking — to obtain information for reporting. But if someone else obtains information improperly and gives it to us, then we might use it. As noted by Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia Journalism School, in a recent piece for the New Yorker:

[T]he press—at least, the more established American corner of it—has a standard that works as a daily guide to behavior, even when it seems to defy logic. A congeries of information-gathering techniques, including breaking and entering, stealing, and phone-hacking, are unpardonable and can never be undertaken directly by news organizations, but if others give news organizations the fruits of such labors it’s fine to publish them. Bradley Manning is a traitor, but Nick Davies, of the Guardian (who received Manning’s “war logs” from WikiLeaks), is a patriot, and Julian Assange occupies some nebulous in-between zone.

Prosecutors who use search warrants to pry into politicians’ personal lives and then leak their findings before filing any charges are sleazy. Journalists who publish transcripts of Eliot Spitzer’s text messages to a prostitution service are models of professionalism. Ritual sanctification is assumed to take place at the moment when questionably obtained information passes into the hands of a reporter.

So consider yourselves warned. That edgy joke you want to email around to the entire practice group, that passionate political email you want to blast out to your entire law school? Well, please don’t send, unless you are prepared to see it on Above the Law someday.

LOL, faggot David Welker tries to whiteknight

David Welker 5 minutes ago

First of all, I don't think there is anything wrong with Ms. Hu being ambitious and wanting to transfer to Yale. Of course, such a thing is very challenging to do. But if you don't have ambitious goals, then you will not achieve challenging things. I applaud both Ms. Hu's ambition and her openness about it. If this is a goal she wants to achieve, why shouldn't she try and be open about it? There is no shame in not succeeding in such a thing either.

In terms of her experience at Wake in light of Ms. Hu's decision to be public about her ambitions, I think it would be unfortunate if people treated her negatively. I think objectively speaking any of her peers would have to concede that you tend to have better career opportunities as a Yale Law graduate. I am not sure if the disparities in opportunities is really justified or not, but that is the way our society is currently structured. Who can blame someone for trying to position themselves to the best of their ability?

A final point. I disagree with David Lat about Yale Law students. I think that many Yale Law Students are genuinely nice people who would not actually stab someone else in the back to achieve X prestige whore opportunity, although they will certainly throw their hat in the ring. I sense a little projection going on here. :) That said, to the extent that someone is really feeling ruthless, it is in fact good to suppress the expression of such feelings.

I also think there are a lot of stereotypes about Harvard Law School being ruthless that are not true. I think most people who attend that school are actually genuinely nice and decent people, although, as with any large group of people, there are certainly exceptions.

Anyway, Ms. Hu should feel free to not only pursue her ambitions, but to pursue them openly. At the same time, I hope she has perspective. Getting into Yale Law School is not nearly as important to the quality of her life and overall happiness as she probably thinks it is. Your life is ultimately what you make of it, whether you go to Yale Law School or Wake Forest School of Law.

So basically as long as you strive, it's okay to treat "lesser" people like shit if they don't share your overwhelming obsession with prestige.

You gave her what she deserves, right? Bravo, faggots.

lol not at all assuming she gets decent grades, which she probably does. I thought the blog was lulzy and probably not well thought out, but most of the world isn't as kneejerkishly aspie as ATL and xo bro. I actually feel bad for her at this point.

Subject: getting a motorcycle in new haven, saving myself the trouble

1L classes across our great land are full of people just like this. most just know how to better hide their douchiness (not blog about it).

in my opinion, her really big issue is going to be that she can't write for shit. she suffers from a problem common among people who have had a little taste of feeling smarter than others (pbk, etc.): namely, confusing her ability to strive and grind for actual intelligence. so she thinks it's totally acceptable to write a sentence like "However, a rising 2L reader made a comment to me yesterday which helped me understand that successful delineation does not necessitate the acting of an alternate social role or the attainment of an ideal reputation. ."

These are the people many professors love to ding on exams. Either because straining for style like this is fucking annoying, or because it's some sort of subconscious flag that the writer isn't very intelligent.

My advice to Tammy, if you're reading this: lose the fucking thesaurus and write shorter sentences. also, as is probably clear by now, law students and lawyers tend to be smart people, smarter than you're apparently giving them credit for, even at a TTT like wake forest. when you write stuff about how this is for the yale law admissions committee, then try to delete that and write a letter to abovethelaw about how you were doing it only for family and friends, your damage control just comes off as desperate, and you come off as an idiot.

Yeah no shit. There's only one way you can be a self described gunner and end up at a TTT like Wake Forest, and that's by having a room temperature IQ.
