Don't listen to the other reply. Cardio is not the answer bro. The issue is entirely with your diet. I've noted this phenomenon before on the boards. Despite being 6'4" and 195 pounds, with a pretty legit body, when I ran a marathon last year, I got smoked by some elephants. Overweight people who run a shit ton will lose SOME weight, and they'll become pretty good runners (I'm a terrible runner), but those chronic cardio folks will never lose any real pounds. You need to clean up your diet, cut the carbs, and incorporate some strength training.

(FWIW, I'm a certified personal trainer as a hobby, so I have some knowledge/experience)

This. Long and slow is not the key to weight loss.

You should run intervals, so warm up at 6 mph for 6 minutes. Then switch to intervals, alternating between 6 and 9 mph, running 60 seconds, then sprinting 30. If you can do this for 18 minutes followed by a 6mph cooldown run you'll start burning fat.

if that doesn't work, count calories.

This is stupid. OP is clearly not expending enough calories. He should do more running (atleast 2.5 hrs per week) not less. For most people, that's a more sustainable way to lose weight than cutting calories (which should definitely be kept under control). Also, the low-carb diet is flame.

Lifting isn't a bad idea though.

Wrong. Diet should be #1. Cutting calories is easy. Most of the excess calories people eat come from carbs. Sugary drinks, chips, candy, etc. That stuff doesn't fill you up which is why you eat so much of it. Cut that stuff out and eat a balanced diet. You can consume fewer calories without feeling starved. You don't have to do no-carb but most fats ought to reduce their carb intake to <40% of total calories.

Strength training is better than cardio. The guy who loses weight on a lifting program is going to keep more muscle than the guy who does it on the treadmill. More muscle = lower % of body fat. The guy on the treadmill loses too much muscle and just gets skinny fat. Cardio is important for the overall heart/respiratory benefits but is not as effective for overall body composition.

I am of the opinion that at least 15 miles per week gets you to a decent level of fitness and keeps weight off. You've got to watch your diet though

I'm a hard core runner, but if weight loss is the goal I would say that running (at least running alone) is not the best way to accomplish the goal. Diet and weights. P90X is great. If you run, do it as a supplement or because you enjoy running.

I'm glad to hear this b/c I hate running unless playing tennis or bball.

I was going to do like 5-6 "meals" of fruits/vegetables and throw in a cpl cans of tuna or grilled chicken for the protein.

Does this work? I normally eat multiple fast foods a day, drink a lot of beer, and eat like the fatty I am.

Obviously that's a diet improvement. Read "Eat to Live" -- says to do what you're doing. Eat as much fruits and veggies as you want; you will feel full, get tons of nutrients, and weight will melt off quickly because of the low level of calories. If you're going to lift weight, tuna and turkey are good for protein (but most people overestimate how much protein they really need and underestimate how much protein is in veggies and beans).

Not if you're eating all fruits, veggies, and chicken/turkey/tuna/beans. I sometimes throw some broccoli and strawberries into a protein shake, but with that overall diet it's not necessary.

Why is this retarded meme so prevalent here? Diet fads are retarded and just feel-good ways to fool people into believing they can get in shape while still being lazy shitfags.

You're going to need to run or expend calories in some other way via cardio a) to lose weight and b) to attain a general level of sound cardiac health and fitness.

I agree with (b), but not necessarily (a). You expend a shitton of calories by lifting weights and increasing muscle mass. If you are suggesting that running (or other cardio) is the only way to expend calories, you are going against all known research in the field, not to mention the anecdotal evidence of people like me who run way more miles than the average runner and only lose weight when resistance training comes into the picture. Also, see below for johnnyBlaze's oft-repeated mantra of "sprinting good, distance running bad."

Jonnyblaze is retarded as fuck and probably flaming. Link to known research in the field? The principal way to lose weight is to expend more calories than you burn, simple as that. But yeah, I think both weight training and running are integral parts of this. FWIW, I tend to lose weight with cardio and put on weight (as muscle mass) when I lift in addition. Of course, muscle mass weight is generally credited.

One year ago, I was a little taller than you and weighed 198. I started taking care of myself better last march. I weighed 163 this morning. Here's my progression.

The most important thing is diet. Anyone who tells you different is wrong. If you got fat, it's not because you didn't exercise. It's because you consumed more calories than you burned. People like to make a bigger deal about stuff like carbs. While there are superior and inferior ways (type, time of day) to consume your calories, it comes down to the fact you need to create a caloric deficit day after day to lose weight. That's the most important thing. You need to stop eating garbage. Is it fun? No. That said, some people say 'tough it out, you should make yourself go to bed hungry.' This is also false. It's not sustainable. Balance. Replacing lunch w/ a protein bar and an apple would be an ideal place to start.

I started running. Started off slow - 3-4 mi. like 4x/wk. Plus sit-ups and push-ups. This got me through the first 15 pounds. It was easy. My body didn't want to weigh that much.

Eventually I realized I was looking skinnier but not stronger. And when I jumped up the amount I ran, my knee started giving me a bit of trouble. Not enough to stop, but enough to add other stuff into the mix. If you like sports, that's a great thing to do a time or two a week. I hate any night time exercise, so that's out for me. I added in biking. I don't do the elliptical. It's for women and gay. I started lifting weights. Not too heavy and just for upper body.

It's about commitment. Commitment to your diet and your workout routine. Rome wasn't built in a day. But it was built eventually. Also, don't expect perfection. You're going to slip. Fine. Just don't make it worse by fucking up 2-3 days in a row.

Oh and I drink like a fish on the weekends and wasn't going to change this. I just didn't eat garbage when I'd go out or come home after a night of drinking. But I did drinking beer during the week (for the most part, I do maybe once a month). Overall, the work isn't hard. The repetition is what gets most people.

No. Being as fat as you are and as fat as I was shows weakness, regardless of personality. Attractive women, even if only subconsciously, don't like that trait. You can overcome it by having ten million dollars, but that's about the only way.

"better off" for weight loss? agreed. Distance running has its place, though. I do long weekend runs of 20-30 miles, but I do hill repeats and fast shorter-distance repeats on the track during the week.

It's cyclical, not every weekend. Some weekends will only involve 15 mile runs, others (at peak training for me) will involve 35 mile runs. I also choose the terrain based on whether I'm pushing it or maintaining a base level of endurance fitness.

lol this is bullshit. all the medical research says that the cardiopulmonary benefits only come from at least 2-3. hours of sustained aerobic exerccise per week. You don't have to jog it (personally I do 30-minute 5-mile runs), but you need to log the time or the calorie-equivalent.

Both studies involved young people, and the one in the NYTimes article involved "sprinting" on a spin bike. The body fares less well when running at top speed, especially for older people. Otherwise, I don't dispute the cardiovascular benefit of HIIT.

That's just not true (except for time spent). There was a recent study that confirmed that most injuries happen when people reach maximum exertion. Especially for older people, all-out sprints amount to begging for injury.

obviously olds have to be more careful. but if you only sprint for 20 minutes (w/ time spent resting between intervals) vs steady jogging for 45 minutes I think you're more likely to hurt yourself with the latter.

VO2 max isn't equal to cardiovascular health. They've done studies on this. I recognize that you're a sprinting/Tabata/HIIT troll, and there is no doubt that those are very, very good. But it's not true that cardiovascular health and capacity are always and forever better improved by sprinting than by moderate intensity, steady state cardio work.

It's also not true that cardio work catabolizes as viciously as people think. In the next few years both of these myths will go the way of "starvation mode".

serious distance running is probably bad for your heart.

that said, i wouldnt necessarily use vo2 max as a marker for "health" (especially long term) but people use "cardio" to mean any number of things. in terms of "fitness" vo2 is an alright tool because too often people just use blatantly meaningless definitions (eg, begging the question by saying how well you can jog five miles determines what kind of cardio shape youre in)
