I bet a lot of them make a good living despite what people say.
a junior interned at a decent small firm this semester. she told me that there are a lot of sure-win cases on which the associates need not spend much time (mostly spending a few days writing briefs and appearing in courts). not big cases but contingency cases that the firm will very likely win. if they win, they will get 1/3 and $200,000
200,000 is very little money but there are many cases!
given that it is a very small firm and there are numerous cases of this nature, it would seem that the associates make a good (though not luxurious) living. and they do.

why?
I am just reporting.
those are not slip and fall personal injury cases but not overly complex....
if a firm has numerous such cases the associates have it pretty good.

I worked for a 10 man firm first summer in a small city in flyover country. They were doing pretty well. If I had to guess, they probably averaged 300k per partner doing mostly transactional work with some commercial litigation mixed in.
To be fair, 8 of them had degrees from T25 law schools (2 from Harvard).
Seems like these types of firms are doing it right because their hours weren't that bad and they had a pretty baller lifestyle. Yet, I doubt that most firms are like this.

I remember talking to the partners when they took me out. They asked me what I thought about investing 1M in real estate or putting it into diversified portfolios. None of them lived extravagant lifestyles, but probably had a home worth 400-500k (goes far in these kinds of cities), drove a BMW / AUDI / LEXUS, and belonged to the local country club.
They pretty much represented all of the small municipalities in the
area. They also had a large number of medium sized businesses (auto dealerships, statewide chains, etc). The most interesting work I saw them do was related to industrial waste and environmental damage. One of their clients was having problems building storage because a local municipality was being a dick.
If you can stand being bored to death in a city with no culture it's pretty boss.
