28 F 180 lbs 5"5. Going to ex-still-friend's wedding. Cannot get out of this.
The last time he saw me and before these two years of big law I was 130 and always whining about how I needed to lose 10. Meanwhile he's marrying a tiny Asian who whines about needing to gain ten. Heh, of course, I have not let on that I have ballooned.
Obviously, it's a little late to get to where I want to be by then. But I need to look as good as possible as quickly as possible. Any help appreciated.
Current plan:
1200-1400 calories per day, as protein packed as possible.
Running - 1 hour every other day. (Currently I can only run half the time, but working up to it.)
Weights, every other day- following the New Rules of Lifting for Women program, which emphasizes higher weights and strength/muscle building
Try to be more active in day-to-day.
Tweaks? A couple weeks before depending on progress, I might cut the exercising and juice fast.
How low can I realistically get? Enough time to get defined arms assuming not still too fat for them to show?

Why? Everything I read seems to suggest less will 1) not enable me to work out effectively 2) put body into starvation mode and inhibit fat loss 3) make me weak and miserable 4) not be sustainable.
I'd be willing to try less, hence the short-term fasting at end. But I feel like I'd just look wasted, still fat, and flabby.
3 months should be enough time to gain a little muscle, and I think women look a lot better that way. Hides the fat you do have better.

You can probably lose 20 pounds realistically if you do everything in your power to lose fat. This might sound depressing to you, but you need to be realistic.
Don't just eat 1200-1400 calories per day. There is more to dieting than just calorie restriction. You can manipulate hormones through the 1000x different types of carb cycling for an increased metabolic burn.
Look up intermittent fasting and/or things like Carb Nite to approach diet. 90% of the results you get will be from diet. Do not think you can run yourself lean in 2.5 months.
Slow walking is better than running for body composition, especially if you are weight training. (Note, I didn't say walking 30 minutes is the same as running 30 minutes). Walking fasted in the morning is an amazing choice for body composition. Bodybuilders have known this for years.
Do not go on a juice shake diet 2 weeks out. That is retarded. If you want rapid results 2-4 weeks out, look up a protein sparing modified fast such as the Rapid Fat Loss Handbook (someone above mentioned) or the Velocity Diet.
When you start to get burned out because you are currently a fat ass and think you can just go from doing nothing to totally changing your diet, and running/lifting everyday... drop exercise frequency, but don't drop the diet.

Other points noted. The running I'm doing mostly for me. I've run 6 marathons and 14 halfs before. Now I can't even finish two miles. But it makes me feel sane and I enjoy it. I need that back, regardless of what I look like at a wedding (though yes, that's the target.)
I already do "walk" in the morning for an hour with my dog at Riverside before eating. But it's easy to stop and chat with other dog owners or go too slowly. So going to try to make this a little more intense.

I guess it's just hard for me. I've always eaten too much. It's just, I used to balance it out with a ton of exercise: rock climbing, running- I was on a volleyball team here in the city throughout law school.
Then work started and it threw my schedule to shit. I went four months without a single day off, including weekends. I ate worse than before, with Seamless for dinner and became slothful and gluttonous and miserable, which made me slothful and gluttonous.
My mom's not fat. Nor will I be... soon.

see personal trainer at a gym for a free 'consultation'. Join a gym, see them for a week or so, to get acquainted with doing weights, start up a fitness/diet plan. Then drop the trainer. No extra $$, part of membership. I'd say aim for 1200 btw, not 1400. Go to gym 6-7x/week for 1-2 hrs/day. You'll want to do about 45 mins of cardio, plus 20 mins of weight lifting and specific targeted body exercises. If you have an iPhone (or perhaps blackberry), download the Nike Training App and choose different exercises. You'll want to do some circuit training stuff regardless, to build up intensity and add diversity to your workout.
p.s. I did this & lost 10-15 lbs since January, but I already have a 19 BMI and am very fit, so didn't need to lose weight. Just felt like it.

When I see them exercising, I judge them too. Maybe I'm only rooting for them, "Attagirl, hope she sticks around." Maybe I'm acknowledging how unlikely it is that they'll still be at the gym in three weeks. Maybe I'm assessing them every time they come in to note progress or lack thereof.

the plan to severely limit calories is off point. i lost almost 10lbs in a month by doing p90x and cutting out processed food from my diet. i stopped exercising, but i cook all my own meals and am still losing weight.
the only processed foods i eat now are yogurt and peanut butter. other than that, my diet is 95% vegetarian and i eat as much as i want without counting calories. when you eat whole, natural foods, it is nearly impossible to overeat.
the videos in the above link are a 180 description of why balancing calories-in and calories-out is unhelpful.

If not flame this is going to be a challenge. On the plus side, since you only recently put on a lot of the weight it will be easier than if you've been 180 for a decade.
To avoid "starvation mode" try to eat many small meals throughout the day. Eat a large breakfast and try to eat your meals at the same time each day.
Get a tape measure and skin-fold calipers. These will give you much more information than a scale.
Focus weight training on the lower body. These are the largest muscles and will in turn burn the most fat.
Running may not be the best option if you are that heavy. Your joints may give out before your cardio and you risk injury. The stress of running may also release cortisol leading to fat storage. I would recommend you do spinning, ergometer or fast walking on incline treadmill.
In the last week before the wedding you should cut out sodium to lose water weight. Get a nice tan and possibly wear some compression undergarments.
My final advice is for you to re-examine why you want to get into shape. Fitness is a lifestyle and goals like "I wanna look good for some specific event" leads to yo-yoing behavior when the event has passed and you feel entitled to a reward. You are not too old to turn your health around but whatever you do must be based on sustainable goals rather than quick fixes.

Listen, I used to be a personal trainer to women, a bikini model, and stripper, so I know a few things about drastic weight loss. Though everything you read may tell you it's "unhealthy", you can easily eat under 1000 cals/day and remain well: it's called a protein-sparing modified fast, and it should be complemented by weight training, interval cardio, lots of caffeine and sleep>
Typical diet:
bkfast: 1 cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt (100 cals, 15 grams protein)topped with a few berries (30 cals); green tea or black coffee
snack: 1 EAS Carb Sense shake (110 cals, 17 grams protein), plus 1 cup of plain broccoli+ spinach (150 cals)
lunch: 4-5 oz plain, grilled chicken, turkey or fish and 1 cup plain veggies ( 150 cals, 25 grams protein); green tea
snack: 1 handful walnuts (120 cals, 3-5 grams protein)
dinner: same as lunch + multivitamin + essential fatty acids
TOTALS: 700 calories, approx 85 grams/protein
Sleep 8+ hrs/night
Exercise: Lift HARD 3-4 days/week. 1-1.5 hours of cardio, including 15-20 mins of intervals EVERY DAY. I recommend cardio kickboxing, zumba, or any other high-intensity cardio.
Once per week, have a cheat meal not to exceed 600 calories.

going well. down 10 pounds. energy level still solid. i don't think i'm making strength and cardio gains as quickly as i would if i were eating more calories (average 960 for the week, with highest day 1300 and lowest 780 and it's hard for me to even replicate what i did three weeks ago when i started with more cardio). but my main goal isn't strength or cardio gains right now. just cranking out 1 hour of cardio (run/walking in intervals) for an hour per day, five days per week and walking min 5 miles per day six days per week + strength training three times this week.)
if i drop anything, it would be strength. it makes me feel a little puny and i'm super, super sore. it's the most taxing aspect and therefore makes me least likely to maintain the whole thing. but continuing for now. thoughts?

you're too focused on exercise. the diet should occupy 90% of your emphasis because it will create 90% of the weight loss. burning a few hundred calories walking is fine, but if you didn't eat those calories in the first place, there's no issue. you got pretty good advice in this thread - there is no 'starvation' mode. try to stay in the 1000 - 1100 calories sweet spot at least six days a week, and roll it down to 1000 and under as you get used to it.

your walks should be based around time and intensity, not distance. i'd drop weight training for now. you're a chick so you can see some actual benefit from doing shit like push-ups and assisted pull-ups until you develop some functional strength, which won't be for quite a while. intense sets of modestly weighted squats would be an exception, but it's not critical for what you're trying to do.

Going okay. It's not as fast as I'd hoped, but my hopes were never very realistic. I hit 159 pounds today, which I feel like I've been trying to get to for forever. Weight loss has really slowed down. But I've lost enough to see changes. The goal is at least ten more pounds by July 15, which will make my BMI technically healthy, even if I still have a long way to go. And that will give me another 3 weeks to consider more drastic short-term weight loss, like fasting or whatever, before I head down for the wedding (flight Aug 8).
Also, I do feel way, way better. I'm up to jogging for an hour 4-5 days per week. And I don't care how slowly I'm going now (11 min mile) or that it isn't the most effective thing for looking good quickly. I forgot how cathartic it is, how much better it makes me feel.

Was not successful in drastically reducing carbs as between that and the calorie reduction, I just didn't have energy to exercise. And becoming active again has been a very important goal of mine, too.
So I normally have my largest meal about 2-3 hours before I run/workout. Occasionally I will have it at a different point of the day if I'm meeting up with friends or have a dinner meeting or something. It's normally 400-500 calories. And while I do try to limit to whole grains, beans and good carbs, it's more the calories I focus on. There have been rare times when I'll have bread or noodles. (It's also because this is the one meal with enough calories that it works to have with other people and social meals are occasionally more limiting in terms of best choices.)
The rest of the food for the day I make sure keeps me at under 1000 calories. So meals are pretty small. Typically,I'll eat a no-fat greek yogurt, or a couple boiled eggs, cottage cheese and fruit, a salad with no dressing and limited proteins/fats or some nuts. Occasionally I'll eat pre-packaged diet bars.
I track calories every day. I went over 1000 one day last month (1102), and have averaged 910 calories per day.

144. I have rocked the last three weeks. This is happening. Lame that I'm prouder of this than anything else I've ever done? Whatevs. I am.
1 month till I leave. I can lose a minimum of 10 pounds, easy. No one can tell a 5 lb weight gain. Bet I can lose more, though.

You'd never find a doctor who recommends you stack ephedrine and caffeine for weight loss, but shitloads of people do it. There are maybe two or three cases where someone died from doing this, but later IIRC it always turns out they took waaay too much and ODed, basically.
I've done EC stack w/success before.
Ephedrine used to be a weight loss supplement IIRC. I told my mom about my EC stack and she was basically "lol i remember when we all did that in the 80s"
