career counselor told my sister to do jd/mba

167-168 (I don't know which)/3.92 at legit top-15 college (not Brown), currently paralegaling for two years at one of the top 3 firms in a secondary region.
granted, she could get into UVA early, but why? why biglaw? and jd/mba seems even dumber. |

1. politics: the connections you get from both the law and b-schools are invaluable 2. distressed debt/restructuring: knowledge of both finance as well as bankruptcy law, tax law, etc., is critical. 3. entrepreneurship: knowing both law and business helps when starting your own company. 4. government or NGO: for the obvious reasons. if you want to do some type of financial or econ policy work at world bank, fed, or IMF, having both degrees gives you more clout. |

the difference is that for non-urm guys, you basically need a prestigious company on your resume (MBB, top bulge-bracket, PE, hedge fund, etc), but with chicks they could get away with working at second-tier firms or some niche area like luxury marketing, non-profit, media, etc. |
